วันนี้อยู่บ้านคนเดียวทั้งวัน พอตกดึกหน่อยก็จะออกอาการเพี้ยนๆ คิดฟุ้งซ่าน นู่นนี่ อันเป็นที่มาของบล็อกวันนี้ กับ topic ที่คิดไม่ตกซะทีว่าชีวิตข้างหน้าอีก 4 - 5 ปีจะเอายังไงดีหว่า ...

เริ่มต้นท้าวความจากวันที่ออกจากเมืองไทยมาเรียนโทต่อที่นี่เมื่อปี 2007 ตอนนั้นก็ตั้งใจไว้ว่า เมื่อเรียนจบแล้วก็คงมีสองทางเลือก ทางเลือกที่หนึ่งก็คือหางานที่เมกาไม่ได้ ต้องกลับเมืองไทย (ไม่น่านะ มันต้องได้สิ) กับทางเลือกที่สองถ้าได้งานที่เมกาก็ลองทำดูสักปีสองปี เก็บตัง เก็บประสบการณ์ แล้วก็จะกลับเมืองไทย ... แต่เมื่อเรียนจบ ตอนแรกก็คิดว่าจะไม่สามารถหางานดีๆ ได้แล้ว เพราะว่าดันมาเรียนจบตอนเศรษฐกิจเมกาล่มพอดี ตอนนั้นคิดว่าได้งานอะไรก็เอาว่ะ ทำซักปีสองปีเก็บประสบการณ์แล้วกลับเมืองไทย

สรุปโชคชะตาเข้าข้างซัน ได้งานที่ไมโครซอฟ ตอนนั้นแทบไม่อยากจะเชื่อตัวเองเลย เหมือนถูกหวย ไม่ใช่แค่หางานที่เมกาในช่วงเศรษฐกิจพังได้แค่นั้น ยังได้งานที่ไมโครซอฟอีกต่างหาก OMG มากๆ ... ซันก็เลยย้ายมาเมือง Redmond, WA เริ่มทำงานกับไมโครซอฟ ตอนที่เริ่มทำงานก็ตั้งใจว่า "สามปี" เก็บตังได้ ใช้หนี้ค่าเล่าเรียนหมด จะกลับเมืองไทยละ จากที่บ้านมานานเหลือเกิน อยากใช้เวลาอยู่กับครอบครัวบ้าง ชีวิตที่นี่ก็ happy ดีนะ มีอิสระ เพื่อนก็มีค่อนข้างเยอะ แต่มันไม่ได้สนิทมากนี่สิ ปกติก็ต้องอยู่คนเดียว เผชิญปัญญาเองคนเดียว เวลาป่วยหนักๆทีนี่เศร้ามาก เพราะรู้สึกว่าคงไม่มีคนที่นี่มาสนใจ ต้องดูแลตัวเองเอง ดูแลตัวเองดีๆ

และแล้วทำงานไปเรื่อยๆสักพักนึง ก็ถึงเวลาพักร้อน ลากลับไทยสองอาทิตย์ นี่เป็นการกลับไทยครั้งแรกในรอบสองปีกว่าที่ไม่ได้เหยียบเมืองไทยเลย (ได้เจอที่บ้านบ้างตอนคุณแม่มาเยี่ยม) พอกลับไทยความรู้สึกแรกสุดเมื่อออกจากสนามบิน คือ ... "โอ้วนี่กรุงเทพเหรอเนี่ย ทำไมมันช่างดูเก่าๆ สกปรก ไม่เป็นระเบียบเรียบร้อยอย่างนี้นะ" ตอนนั้นก็งงเหมือนกันว่าทำไมความรู้สึกต่อเมืองที่เคยอยู่มาตั้งแต่เกิดเปลี่ยนไปได้ขนาดนั้น ทั้งๆที่เมื่อก่อนก็ไม่เคยรู้สึกว่ามันไม่น่าอยู่ตรงไหน แต่เมื่อเปรียบเทียบกับเมือง Bellevue หรือว่า Redmond ที่เป็นแบบเมืองใหม่ ทุกอย่างดูสะอาดเรียบร้อย ถนนเป็นระเบียบ การจราจรเป็นระเบียบ กรุงเทพก็กลายเป็นเมืองเก่าไปในทันใด ... ตอนนั้นตอนกลับเข้ามา ซันก็เริ่มคิดละ "ถ้าตัวเองมีสิทธิเลือก จะเลือกอยู่ที่ไหนดี?"

หลังจากกลับมาจากพักร้อนก็กลับมาทำงานต่อที่ไมโครซอฟ ชีวิตที่นี่ก็ดูลงตัวดี ถึงแม้จะเหงาๆ ไปนิด และหลายๆวันที่รู้สึกว่าไม่มีอะไรจะทำ (นอกจากงาน) เรื่องอื่นๆก็ดูค่อนข้างโอเค เริ่มชินกับการดูแลสุขภาพตัวเอง ไม่ปล่อยให้ป่วยไปง่ายๆ พอเริ่มรู้สึกป่วยหน่อยก็รีบหาวิธีป้องกันทันที ชีวิตก็ราบรื่นดี เผลอแป็บเดียวก็ทำงานผ่านไปได้หนึ่งปีแล้ว พอครบหนึ่งปีก็ได้เลื่อนต่ำแหน่ง แถมยังได้ออฟฟิศใหม่ (ส่วนตัวชั่วคราว) การงานดูเริ่มเข้าที เริ่มปรับตัวกับงานได้ เมื่อทุกอย่างเหมือนจะลงตัว ก็มีความคิดประหลาดผุดขึ้นมาในสมองตีกันวุ่นวายไปหมด .. "เหลืออีกแค่สองปีเองเหรอเนี่ย ยังไม่ได้ทำงานที่อยากทำเท่าไหร่เลย แค่อีกสองปีจะพอเหรอ" .. "โห อีกสองปี งานการก็คงจะลงตัวมากกว่านี้ จะทิ้งงานที่มั่นคง รายได้ดีกลับไปเมืองไทยเหรอ กลับไปเมืองไทยแล้วจะทำอะไรหล่ะ" .. "โอ๊ย แต่ก็คิดถึงที่บ้านแหะ รู้สึกว่าตอนนี้สนิทกับที่บ้านน้อยลง อยากกลับไปใช้เวลากับที่บ้านอีก"

ไม่มีคำตอบใดๆสำหรับเส้นทางชีวิตของซันในตอนนี้ ความคิดทั้งสองฝ่ายยังคงต่อสู้กันอยู่ในสมอง ฝ่ายหนึ่งก็เลือกความทะเยอทยาน ความมุ่งมั่น เลือกงาน และความสำเร็จ อีกฝ่ายหนึ่งก็เลือกที่จะใช้ชีวิตกับครอบครัว กลับเมืองไทย กินอยู่แต่พอดี ... ในความสับสนซันก็ได้แต่หวังว่า สุดท้ายแล้วมันจะมีคำตอบที่ดีกว่า ทางเลือกที่เลือกทั้งความสำเร็จและครอบครัว เพียงแต่เส้นทางนั้นยังซ่อนเร้นอยู่ ณ ตอนนี้ และหวังว่าเราจะค้นพบมันก่อนที่จะสายเกินไป ..

โอเค ซื้อไอโฟนมาได้กว่าสองเดือนละ แต่ยังไม่รู้สึกว่าใช้มันคุ้มเท่าไหร่เลย วันๆก็หยิบมานั่งเขี่ยไปเขี่ยมา (สลับไปหน้านู้นที หน้านี้ที เพราะไม่รู้จะทำอะไร) แต่ก็มี scenarios ให้ได้ใช้บ้างเช่น

1. เล่น fb อันนี้นับว่าเป็นกิจกรรมหลักบนไอโฟนเลย อัพเดทรูปกับสถานะ ใช้ได้แทบตลอดเวลาตั้งแต่ตอนตื่นนอน ที่ยังไม่ได้ลุกจากเตียง ถึงตอนก่อนนอน

2. นาฬิกา (พร้อมนาฬิกาปลุก) อันนี้สำคัญมากเป็น feature หลักที่โทรศัพท์ที่เรามีต้องทำได้ (โทรศัพท์บ้านไหนทำไม่ได้เนี่ย!) เพราะว่าไม่เคยใส่นาฬิกา ต้องหยิบไอโฟนออกมาดูทุกครั้ง

3. ดูหุ้น อ่ะอันนี้ใช้ทุกวัน จ - ศ ตอนตลาดเปิด (ตื่นนอนพอดี) กับตลาดปิด

4. ฟังเพลงตอนเข้าห้องน้ำ หาโอกาสใช้ iPhone ฟังเพลงเต็มที่ (แต่ก็ไม่ค่อยมี ในรถก็ใช้ไม่ได้ เซ็ง) ก็มีตอนเข้าห้องน้ำนี่แหละทั้งแปรงฟัน อาบน้ำได้หมด เอาเพลงเข้าไปฟังด้วย ทำให้อารมณ์ดีขึ้น ยิ่งตอนเพิ่งตื่นนอนด้วยแล้ว รู้สึกว่าทำให้วันสดใสขึ้นอีกนิด

5. ถ่ายรูป ถ่ายวิดีโอ ใช้บ่อยเหมือนกัน เพราะว่าอยากอัพขึ้น fb แต่อัพวิดีโอทันทีเลยไม่ได้ เพราะว่าเปลือง data plan ที่มีแค่ 200MB

6. ดู map ตอนขับรถ ตอนนี้เริ่มไม่อยากใช้ GPS ละ เพราะว่าอยากจำทางได้ แต่บางทีก็ไปไม่ถูกก็เอา GPS ในไอโฟนแทนละกัน เพราะว่าดูเสร็จแล้วก็ต้องจำอยู่ดี จะได้จำทางได้ดีขึ้น

7. เล่มเกม โหลดมากเยอะมากกกก แต่ส่วนใหญ่เล่นครั้งเดียวเลิกตลอด ฮ่าๆ มีแค่ไม่กี่เกมที่เล่นแล้วติด

อืม ไม่มีแล้วมั้ง เขียนไปเขียนมาก็รู้สึกว่าตัวเองใช้เยอะเหมือนกันแหะ แต่ไม่รู้สึกว่าคุ้มเลย เวลาที่เล่นไอโฟนจริงๆมีแต่ ตอนตื่นนอน (ที่ยังเปิดเครื่องคอมพิวเตอร์ไม่เสร็จ) กับตอนก่อนนอนที่ปิดคอมไปแล้ว เหอะๆ เป็นเอามากนะซัน

นี่นับว่าเป็นประสบการณ์ล่องแก่งครั้งแรกที่น่าประทับใจมากเลยทีเดียว ถึงแม้ว่ามันจะไม่ได้ตื่นเต้นตลอดเวลา แต่ก็มีช่วงที่น่าหวาดเสียวเป็นพักๆ แถมยังมีเสียงหัวเราะตลอดทาง นับว่าคุ้มค่าทีเดียว (กับราคา? มันแพงมากเลยอ่ะ $70 ต่อคนแหนะ)

พวกเราออกเดินทางกันแต่เช้า ซันต้องตื่นตั้งแต่ 6 โมงเช้าเพื่อขับรถไปยัง Goodell Creek, Skagit river ใน North Cascade National Park ซึ่งเป็นการขับรถกว่าสองชั่วโมงครึ่ง เราไปถึงกันประมาณ 11 โมงเช้า แล้วก็พบกับไกด์สาวของเราชื่อ คริสโต พร้อมกับเรือยางประมาณ 5 ลำได้ จากนั้นก็เป็นเวลากินข้าวเที่ยง เพราะต้องรอให้สมาชิกทุกคนมาพร้อมกันให้หมด ไกด์เค้าก็แจกอุปกรณ์ต่างๆ เช่น ไม้พาย รองเท้ากันน้ำ และเสื้อชูชีพ คนที่กินข้าวเสร็จแล้วก็เตรียมตัวกันไป

หลังจากเตรียมตัวกันเสร็จเรียบร้อย คนขับรถก็ต้องขับรถไปจอดรอที่ๆ เป็นจุดหมายปลายทางของการล่องแก่ง เพราะว่าล่องเสร็จ ขึ้นมาแล้วจะได้เจอรถเลย (เป็นระบบที่ฉลาดจริงๆ) แล้วก็นั่งรถบัสของไกด์กลับมา ระหว่างขับรถไปจอดเป็นเวลาประมาณ 10 นาทีได้ก็เห็นสภาพบางส่วนของแม่น้ำ Skagit โห!!! น้ำแอบแรงแหะ ท่าทางน่าสนุก

และแล้วเวลาลงเรือก็มาถึง น้ำเย็นมากกก นี่แค่เดินลุยน้ำไปขึ้นเรือเท่านั้น รู้สึกว่าขาจะชาๆนิดๆ ตายละ ถ้าตกน้ำไปนี่อาจจะไม่สนุกแน่ๆ เหอะๆ เนื่องจากพวกเรามีทั้งหมด 7 คน แต่ว่าเรือมีไม้พายแค่ 6 อันเท่านั้น ก็เลยมีคนต้องอดพายไปหนึ่งคน ซึ่งสาวๆ ในกรุ๊ป ก็อาสารับหน้าที่นั่งบงการ เอ่ย!! นั่งเชียร์ เพื่อนรวมทีมไป ก่อนออกเรือ คุณคริสโต ก็มาสอนวิธีพายและก็คำสั่งต่างๆ เช่น all forward, all backward, left backward, และก็ left forward ซึ่งก็มีไว้สำหรับ เดินหน้า ถอยหลัง เลี้ยวขวา และก็เลี้ยวซ้ายตามลำดับ

เมื่อเกมล่องแก่งเริ่มขึ้น ไกด์ก็จะเป็นคนคอยบังคับทิศทางเรือโดยพายและออกคำสั่งให้พวกเราช่วยพาย เค้าก็จะคอยดูกระแสน้ำ ซึ่งก็เป็นทักษะที่ต้องเข้าใจธรรมชาติของน้ำเป็นอย่างดีเลยทีเดียว ถึงแม้ว่าพวกเราจะลองให้เค้าอธิบาย ซึ่งก็พอจะเข้าใจอยู่บ้าง แต่ก็ดูไม่ออกอยู่ดี แต่สรุปเป็นอันว่าด้วยความเก่งของไกด์ทำให้ต้องออกแรงพายน้อยมาก เรียกว่าไปตามกระแสน้ำเลยทีเดียว เมื่อลองคิดเปรียบเทียบกับตัวเองตอนพายเรือแคนนูแล้วก็คิดว่าถ้าเราอ่านกระแสน้ำออกตอนพายเรือแคนนูคงจะง่ายน่าดู (ครั้งก่อน ซันพายชนขอบเอาๆ)

แต่แม่น้ำ Skagit ก็ไม่ได้ตื่นเต้นอย่างที่คิด เรียกว่าแอบน่าเบื่อเป็นช่วงๆเลยทีเดียว เพราะว่าเหมือนกับมาล่องแพเฉยๆ มากๆ water rafting ที่นี่จะแบ่งความยากออกเป็นขั้นๆ 1 - 5 ขั้น 1 นี่คือง่ายสุด ไกด์เค้าก็บอกว่าส่วนใหญ่จะเป็นระดับ 1 ตลอด จะมีแค่บางจุดเท่านั้นที่เป็นระดับ 3 อืมม .. แอบน่าเบื่อนิดๆ คราวต่อไปจะเอาให้เป็นระดับ 3 ให้ตลอดทางเลย ฮ่าๆ

ล่องไปสักพักไกด์เค้าก็พูดขึ้นมาว่า ตรงนี้น้ำน่าจะลึกพอแล้ว ถ้ามีใครอยากลงไปเล่นน้ำก็ลงได้เลย … เงียบ …… ไม่มีใครอยากลองเป็นคนแรกกันทั้งนั้น แต่ว่าอากาศมันแอบร้อนแหะ ซันก็เลยอยากลอง แล้วก็กระโดดลงน้ำไป ตูม!!! จ๊ากกกกก... น้ำมันเย็นมากๆ ลงไปแล้วรู้สึกว่าขาเริ่มชา ตัวเริ่มชา อยู่ได้ไม่ถึงหนึ่งนาที ก็อยากขึ้น แต่ว่าลองว่าเรือแอบสูง พยายามถีบตัวสองสามทีให้ขึ้นจากน้ำก็ไม่สามารถทำได้ สุดท้ายคริสโตเค้าก็เลยมาลากเราขึ้นจากน้ำไป โหยย ทั้งชา ทั้งสั่น มีน้ำเข้าไปในรองเท้าอีก ขานี่แทบจะไร้ความรู้สึก .. แต่ว่าพอขึ้นจากน้ำเย็นๆ ไปนั่งบนเรือที่อากาศค่อนข้างร้อนแล้วรู้สึกดีมากเลย so worth it! จากนั้นก็เลยมีเพื่อนๆลงน้ำตาม สรุปว่าเราไปตายเป็นดาบหน้าไว้ก่อน ><

ระยะเวลาล่องแก่งทั้งหมดเป็นเวลากว่า 3 ชั่วโมง (ทั้งๆที่ขับรถแค่ 10 นาที แสดงว่าเรือมันไปช้ามาก) พอผ่านไปชักชั่วโมงครึ่งก็ถึงจุดที่น่าตื่นเต้นที่สุดเพราะว่าเป็นระดับ 3 ที่เค้าเรียกว่า rapid เห็นกระแสน้ำข้างหน้าแล้วแรงมาก ทุกคนรีบนั่งเข้าที่ อยู่ในตำแหน่งที่กันตกเรือไว้ก่อน ไกด์ก็สั่งให้เดินหน้าเต็มที่ เพราะว่าต้องออกแรงพายให้เรือเดินหน้าผ่าน rapid ไปให้ได้ พอเรือเข้าไปเจอกระแสน้ำ rapid เข้าหน่อย เรือมันก็จะเหมือนกระดอนๆ บนน้ำ เพราะว่าผืนน้ำมันไม่เรียบ หัวเรือก็จะปักลงไปก่อน ตามมาด้วยแรงกระแทกพร้อมกับน้ำที่สาดเข้ามาเต็มเรือ แล้วเรือก็จะถูกส่งด้วยแรงกระแทก jump ข้ามผืนน้ำที่เป็นหลุมไปข้างหน้า กระแส rapid มีอยู่ประมาณ 3 ช่วง ช่วงสุดท้ายนี่แรงมาก ถึงกับว่าได้ยินจากไกด์ทีหลังว่า เรือของเราเป็นลำเดียวที่ได้ล่องผ่าน rapid สุดท้าย เนื่องจากมีทั้งหมด 8 คนบนเรือ (รวมไกด์) ทำให้เรือมีน้ำหนักพอไม่พลิกคว่ำได้ เรือลำอื่นๆก็อดไปนะคร๊าบบ สำหรับอันสุดท้ายนี่ panic มาก เพราะถึงกับว่ามองไม่เห็นอะไรข้างหน้า มีแต่น้ำสาดเข้ามา น้ำก็สูงมากเลยทีเดียว แต่ก็สนุกมากๆ พอผ่านไปทุกคนก็เฮฮากันใหญ่ เย่!!!

และแล้วช่วงนาทีทองของการล่องแก่งก็หมดไป เมื่อเรามาถึงปลายทาง เสื้อผ้าก็เปียกไปหมด แต่ว่าเราก็เตรียมชุดมาเปลี่ยน (นี่!! เตรียมพร้อม) แต่ไปหยิบชุดเปรียบได้ก็เริ่มหาห้องน้ำเพื่อเปลี่ยนชุด ..... ป รา ก ฎ ณ์ ว่า ...... ไม่มีห้องน้ำ ... OMG เปลี่ยนได้แต่เสื้อเท่านั้น ผู้ชายทุกคนอยู่ในสถานการณ์เดียวกันหมด แต่ว่าสาวๆเค้าเตรียมมาพร้อม .. นั่นแน่ เค้ามีผ้าเช็ดตัวมาด้วย (ปล ทำไมเราคิดไม่ถึงนะ??) ก็เลยลงเอยด้วยการไปขอยืมผ้าเช็ดตัวเค้ามาใช้ ไม่งั้นก็ต้องนั่งกันก้นแชะไปจนถึง Seattle

เป็นอันจบทริปการผจญภัย white water rafting นับว่าสนุกมาก คราวหน้าจะขอเล่น level ที่ยากกว่านี้

อันนี้ขอบ่นเป็นภาษาไทยหน่อยเถอะ เพราะว่าเขียนเป็นภาษาอังกฤษคงยาก

วันนี้ได้ฤกษ์ต้องไปหาหมอฟัน เรื่องของเรื่องคือหลายอาทิตย์ก่อนคิดว่าตัวเองมีฟันผุตรงฟันกลามซี่ในสุด แล้วพอไปพบหมอคราวก่อน เค้าก็ตรวจดูให้ ก็ปรากฎว่าเป็นจริงตามนั้น >< คุณหมอก็เลยนัดให้วันนี้กลับไปอุดฟัน (ทำวันนั้นเลยไม่ได้นะ คุณหมอที่นี่ต้องนัดก่อนล่วงหน้า)

เห้อ ปีนี้หาหมอฟันไปกว่า 5 ครั้งได้แล้ว ถ้าไม่มีประกันจ่ายค่าทำฟันนี่ ป่านนี้คงทำงานมาให้คุณหมดหมด ว่าแต่ว่า .. อุดฟันมันต้องออกตังเองส่วนนึงด้วยสิ 15% อ่ะนะ อุดสองซี่เพราะมันดันผุตรงกลางพอดีเลย ก็รวมไปเหยียบๆ ร้อยเหรียญ - -"

แล้วก็เรื่องก็มาถึงวันนี้ หนีออกจากที่ทำงานเร็วกว่าปกติเพราะว่านัดหมอไว้ 4 โมงเย็น (คุณหมอที่นี่ทำงานเฉพาะวันธรรมดาด้วย เพราะฉะนั้นจำเป็นต้องโดดงานมาทำฟัน) ไปถึงเค้าก็จับพาเข้าห้องแล้วก็ขึ้นเขียง .. ผู้ช่วยคุณหมอเอาผ้ายางสีเขียวๆ ที่เจาะรูตรงกลางไว้สำหรับฟัน พันเข้ากับลวดที่ใช้อ้าปากเรา แล้วก็จับยัดใส่ปาก ที่นี้เราก็หุบปากไม่ได้อีก ต้องอ้าขากรรไกรไปตลอดจนกว่าจะทำเสร็จ (เครียด ..) ไม่จบแค่นั้น เนื่องจากลวดที่ใช้มันเป็นขนาดคนอเมริกัน เราก็เลยต้องอ้าปากกว้างมากกกกก .. แล้วก็เมื่อยขากรรไกรมากกกกกกกกกกกกก ตอนที่เค้าเอามาใส่ก็ยังไม่เท่าไหร่ แต่พอผ่านไปครึ่งชั่วโมงรู้สึกว่าขากรรไกรมันปวดและก็ค้างมาก คิดว่าจะหุบปากได้มั๊ยเนี่ยยย ตอนทำเสร็จ

หลังจากนั้นคุณหมอก็เข้ามาอุดฟันให้ คุณหมอที่นี่แอบไฮโซ มีการถ่ายรูป before & intermediate & after ไว้ให้เราดูด้วย เราจะได้รู้ว่าก่อนทำเป็นยังไงและหลังทำเป็นยังไง แต่พอเริ่มทำการอุดฟันปัญหามันยังไม่จบแค่ลวดที่ใส่ในปากเรา แต่นื่องจากปากที่เล็กกว่าคนที่นี่ทำให้คุณหมอต้องใช้เวลาอยู่นานมากพยายามหาเหล็กที่มาครอบฟันเราได้พอดี (ดูเหมือนว่าเวลาเค้าทำฟันซี่หนึ่ง เค้าจะเอาเหล็กมาครอบฟันอีกซี่ไว้ เพื่อไม่ให้ไปโดนถูกมั้ง) แต่มันปวดขากรรไกรมากกกกกกกกกกกกกกครับคุณหมอ ช่วยหาให้มันเร็วหน่อยยยย ...

ผ่านไปชั่วโมงครึ่งได้ ความทรมานถึงจุดสิ้นสุดลงเมื่อคุณหมอให้ไฟเขียวกับผู้ช่วยคุณหมอให้เอาเหล็กดันออกได้ โอ๊ยย ขยับขากรรไกรแทบจะไม่ได้ มันปวดมาก แต่ก็พยายามฝืนจบหุบปากเข้ามากันได้ เห้อ ... พอเสร็จแล้วคุณหมอก็โชว์รูปที่ถ่าย รูปที่ถ่ายค่อนข้างน่ากลัวเลยทีเดียว เพราะว่าเป็นรูปที่ฟันหายไปครึ่งนึง (คุณหมอตัดฟันออกไปครึ่งนึง) แล้วก็เห็นรอยฟันผุของฟันซี่ที่ติดกัน แอบน่ากลัว แต่รูปหลังทำเสร็จก็ดูดีเลยทีเดียว

เป็นอันว่าจบ ข้อสรุปคือจะไม่ทำให้มีฟันผุอีกแล้ว >< มันก็ไม่เจ็บตอนทำฟันมากนะ แต่มันเมื่อยปากมากเลยนี่สิ ไม่ไหว

Rain during Summer

I guess what they are speaking is true. "Rain make you feel depressed" I have such a kind of that experience today. While it should be summer, Seattle still cover with cloud and rain. Not much activity here during the rain. Definitely, you cannot go for outdoor activities like hiking or picking. I know that if I go out for shopping (spend some money), it will make me feel better. But, I decided to stay home and save money today instead. Hope that it will be sunny tomorrow.

Summer

Summer in Seattle seems to be the time that all people here is waiting for. Since it always rain throughout the year, except in Summer that you can see the blue sky and enjoy the sun. So, everyone is going out, doing outdoor activities, picking with family and friends. This kind of thought is implanted in my mind and makes me feel that I have to go out every weekend even though I don't know where to go. Well, hiking and taking photos from top of a mountain seems to be my favorite. However, doing 6-8 hours hike every week is not very attractive. Last time, we did an 8-hours hike at Lake Serene which is very beautiful at the top and after this hike we decided no more hiking.

So hiking is gone; thus, we spend time sightseeing and eating instead (not so summer's activities, but anyway.) We visited multiple of the best restaurant around Seattle including Maneki - an authentic Japanese restaurant and Crape Café - a very good French restaurant. And, I spent a lot of money in food again. So sad.

Not so sure what will come next for the next week and the rest of summer, but hope that I can enjoy the sun as well as you guys. Enjoy the Summer!

I stopped writing a blog for more than 2 years already and I think I should spend time continue writing it. Well, the reason is I would like to look back into my life when I will be 30, 40, or more than that. Blog (as well as photos) seems to be a good place for memory.

My life has been changing a lot since 2008. I graduated from USC (congrats to myself) and get a job at Microsoft in Redmond, WA. So, here I am in Seattle, WA. Moreover, I work for MS more than 1 year already, but here I need to code in C/C++ which is not my very expertise and the road seems to be tough. Anyway, I feel so great that I was be able to find a job here in such a economic downturn (during 2008-2009) that every company stops hiring new employee.

Thus, I think that I will bring more story about Life in Seattle. Things to do, Places to eat, Activities, etc. I hope that I can keep up with my Blog this time :)

San Diego Trip

This is a much delayed blog since I went to San Diego about one month ago. However, I still would like to write down this good memory and experience so that I can remember it when I look back at this blog.

On Mar 21, we start our trip by catching the train – Amtrak - to Solana Beach, San Diego. The cost of travelling just from Los Angeles to San Diego is so expensive even though we take the train instead of driving. One way ticket is about $30!! And, you know? With this $30 ticket, we still don’t have a seat for 45 minutes. I’m very unimpressed of Amtrak. I don’t think this will happen in US. Anyway, June and I arrive at Solana Beach about 7pm and A come to pick us up and take us to his house. As you can guess, we plan to stay at A’s apartment for the entire of this trip. A’s room is so huge and it has a lot of good-looking furniture and other stuff. My room in Los Angeles looks very poor comparing with his.

Mar 22, we plan to go to downtown, Colorado Island, the old town, and the Pacific beach today. So, we start the trip by a very traditional way - taking a bus to downtown. Downtown, SD is closed to the bay area, so we can walk along the bay and visit the Seaport in this downtown. As we expected, there are a lot of ships and restaurant along the Seaport. We visit some of them and also take a lot of photos (as I always do.)

Facing Tough Work

Long time, I have no chance to write interesting stories since this semester is so tough for me. I have gone to China Town and made a small trip last week, but still have no chance to write about it. And, this blog is not about my trip as well. Actually, this blog is about my workload here.

I took three courses in this semester and also work at ISI as a programmer for 8 hours a week. Here is my Todo list for every week. For the first course – Information Integration on Web – I have to read 2 - 4 papers; learn a new web integration tool and do homework; as well as review 2 – 4 papers for quiz every week. Normally, it takes one day per week to read papers and another day to finish homework and review quiz. That is only one course.

Another course is Analysis of Algorithm. Even though it is somewhat similar to my undergraduate course, I have to spend a lot of time finishing its homework every week. I have to design an algorithm to solve homework’s question, prove it, and analyze its complexity. And, it usually takes half day to finish homework and almost one day to read algorithm textbook.
The last course is somewhat painless since there are three assignments and one project (while others have homework every week). However, I have to spend a lot of time learning C++ because of the assignments. And, C++ is complicated for me.

I also spend all Wednesday working at ISI. Currently, I am maintaining a PHPBB, which is an open source web board. It is not so tough, but it takes time as well. Moreover, I have to spend time doing companies research and applying for a summer intern too.

Thus, this semester is so rough. I have to say that I am so tried, but hope that it will be passed as good as possible.

My Birthday Present

Thank you to all my friends for your wish in my birthday. I so glad that all of you still remember me, even though I am in the half of the world apart. Thank you so much again. And, of course, this year I get the new experience in my birthday – Online Happy Birthday and Online Gift (ha ha). Well, the technology is so advanced and let me always connect with you in another half of the world. Here, I have got a special present from my mom. It is a story of my life from the very start to the time that I departed from Thailand. Thank you, mom.

The Semantic Web

As I said earlier, this blog is going to be about “The Semantic Web”. First, I have to tell that the semantic web is a very young research area in computer science. This blog therefore contains intensive technical stuff, but I will put it in the easiest way that I can do.

Nowadays, the World Wide Web becomes much more dominant from the one in five years ago since it allows individual to be a publisher and express his or her own idea. Before this era, the WWW used to belong to large organizations or companies as well as its contents are very limited to texts and images. Then, the growing of internet technology, especially the uploading bandwidth, lets everyone easier publish their stories, images, or even videos to the world, as we can see from the exponential growth of many web sites namely MySpace.com, Youtube.com, or Flickr.com. However, from many experts’ view, we only utilize about 25% of its power.

The Semantic Web is intended to be the future of the WWW in order to utilize its all potential. This concept was initiated by Tim Berners-Lee – the investor of the World Wide Web – and others. In their vision, the characteristic of today WWW contains one major problem which is WWW is designed for human to read. At the first glance, the previous statement should not be a problem since WWW is obviously designed for human. However, when the WWW is growing to tremendous size, it is tough for us as a human to read all information in the Internet. We therefore need the help of computer to read that information and retrieve only handful interesting ones for us. Thus, the WWW should not be readable only by human but also by computer software. Web sites will then become tremendous valuable resources that we can write infinite software utilizing them.

For example, if I would like to make an appointment with a physician, I can search his information on the Internet, call his front desk, and ask for available times. What if his available times are not match with mine? Then, I have to repeat this tedious process again with a new physician. In the future, with The Semantic Web, however, each physician will have his/her own identity in the WWW. Then, I can use software (called Agent) to search for information (since this information is in machine-readable format). The Agent also know my schedule and then can find the best match as well as make an appointment for me. This example is a very simple application which we will gain from The Semantic Web.

The WWW is a very young technology and it needs us to shape its future. Presently, there is no one know what it will become in the future. But, a lot of people, especially researchers, try to gradually develop it to benefit humanity most. What do you think about the WWW in the future? Which feature of it will benefit you most?

The beginning of Spring 08

For a long time, I didn’t update my blog in English. So, this is a good chance to reveal some stories about me here. First of all, a new semester – spring 2008 – has started. In this semester, I plan to take three courses, but they are still uncertain. The tentative courses are (1) Information Integration on Web, (2) Analysis of Algorithm, and (3) Database System Interoperability.

The first course is an interesting one since I will learn how to use various web sites as resources and design an application utilizing those resources. Creating a travel planning web site, for example, requires handful resources from internet including flight information, tourist attraction information, and weather information. Then, I will learn how to integrate information together and build my own application on top of them.

The second course which is a required course is Analysis of Algorithm. It is the tough one since it requires a lot of thinking and mathematic. And, the third one is about databases and information. In short, in this semester, I will acquire an intensive wisdom in information as I desire.

Another progress here is that I have got a job. In this semester, I am working for ISI or Information Science Institute. It is one of USC’s research institutes and has a lot of brilliant professors working there. My working group do research about knowledge extraction from discussion boards and use NLP or Natural Language Processing to extract patterns from a discussion thread. I think this will be a good opportunity for me to learn some technology, may be do some research while I can earn money to help my parent.

I think those are all interesting stories of my life here now. In fact, I ran into an interesting topic in computer science which I would like to share with others so much. I will write about “The Semantic Web” in the upcoming blog.

ความเดิมตอนที่แล้วหลังจากที่เราได้ท่องเที่ยวไปยังสี่รัฐ California Nevada Utah และ Arizona ในทริปแรก ครั้งนี้ผมและเพื่อนๆ Com Sci จะออกไปทัวร์ชายฝั่งตะวันตกของรัฐ California เป็นเวลาเจ็ดวันกันครับ

Second Trip

Los Angeles -> Lake Tahoe -> Sacramento -> San Francisco -> San Jose -> Monterey

หลังจากที่ผมได้กลับมาพักที่อพาร์ทเมนท์ตัวเองใน Los Angeles เป็นเวลาหนึ่งคืน ผมก็ได้จัดกระเป๋าเตรียมตัวเดินทางไปทริปที่สองทันที โดยทริปนี้จะเริ่มจากการมุ่งสู่ Lake Tahoe ที่อยู่เลย San Francisco ขึ้นไป แน่นอนว่าถ้ามาจาก Los Angeles จะต้องใช้เวลาขับรถเต็มๆหนึ่งวันตามถนน I-5 และต่อ 80 เพื่อไปถึง Lake Tahoe และที่ Lake Tahoe นี่เองเป็นที่ที่เราจะพักกันหนึ่งวันสองคืนเพื่อที่จะเล่น Snowboard จากนั้นเราก็จะไปแวะที่ Sacramento และย้อนกลับไปเที่ยว San Francisco เป็นเวลาสามวัน ก่อนที่จะขับตามเส้น 1 เรียบชายฝั่งทะเลไปพักที่ Monterey และกลับมายัง Los Angeles

1st Day

วันแรกของการเดินทางนั้นไม่มีอะไรมากนัก เพราะพวกเราจะต้องใช้เวลาในรถตั้งแต่เช้าจนค่ำ เราออกจาก Los Angeles กันประมาณเก้าโมง และมุ่งหน้าสู่ Lake Tahoe โดยขับไปตามถนน I-5 ซึ่งเป็นทางหลวงที่ขับง่าย จากนั้นเราจะต้องไปต่อถนน 80 ซึ่งเป็นถนนลัดเลาะภูเขา แต่กว่าเราจะไปถึงถนน 80 ก็มืดค่ำแล้ว แถมขับๆไปหิมะก็ดันตกซ่ะอีก ทำให้ขับลำบากมาก เลนบนถนนก็แทบจะมองไม่เห็น แต่ในที่สุดเราก็ไปถึง Lake Tahoe ด้วยความปลอดภัยจนได้ บ้านพักที่ Lake Tahoe ดูหรูหรามาก เพราะพวกเราเช่าคืนละ $1000 เชียว (เนื่องจากเป็นฤดูท่องเที่ยว และเราอาจจะจองที่พักช้าไปหน่อย) คืนนั้นก็เลยหลับสบายเตรียมตัวไปเล่น Snowboard ในวันรุ่งขึ้น

วันนี้เป็นวันที่พวกเราหลายคนรอคอย เพราะเราจะไปเล่น Snowboard กันครับ บางคนมาทริปนี้เพื่อ Snowboard เลยทีเดียว ผมเองก็รู้สึกอยากเล่นอยู่ (เล็กน้อย) แต่ก็ถือว่าเป็นการเก็บเกี่ยวประสบการ์ณใหม่ เราตื่นกันแต่เช้าเพื่อที่จะใช้เวลากับ Snowboard ได้เต็มที่ เริ่มแรกสุดพวกเราต้องเช่าอุปกรณ์ที่จะใช้เล่นเสียก่อน ตัวผมเองก่อนมาได้ซื้อเสื้อกับกางเกงไว้แล้ว อีกทั้งพวกหมวก แว่นกันแดด ผ้าพันคอก็มีเรียบร้อยแล้ว ดังนั้นผมก็เหลือรองเท้า Snowboard กับเช่า Board นอกจากนั้นแล้วเรายังจะต้องซื้อตั๋วไว้สำหรับขึ้นลิฟต์ไปเล่นบนภูเขาอีกด้วย รวมๆแล้วเสียตังไป $90 นับว่าเป็นกีฬาที่แพงใช้ได้เลยทีเดียว

Squaw Valley and Snowboarding

เมื่อเช่าอุปกรณ์เสร็จพวกเราก็มุ่งหน้าสู่ Squaw Valley ซึ่งเป็นสนามชื่อดังที่มีตราโอลิมปิกอยู่เต็มไปหมด แต่วันนี้อากาศไม่ค่อยเป็นใจเท่าไหร่เลย เพราะว่าเมื่อมาถึงหิมะก็ตกซ่ะแล้ว พวกเรานั่งรถกระเช้าขึ้นไปยังสนามบนภูเขา นี่จะเป็นการเล่น Snowboard ของจริงซ่ะที

สนามบนภูเขาปกคลุมด้วยหิมะไปทั่ว ดังนั้นเมื่อไหร่ที่วางบอร์ดราบลงกับพื้น มันก็จะไหลไปตามความลาดเอียงของเขาทันที อย่างแรกสุดที่พวกมือใหม่ต้องฝึกคือการยืนนิ่งๆอย่างไรไม่ให้บอร์ดไหลไปตามเขา บอร์ด Snowboard นั้นจะมีตัวล็อคกับรองเท้าของเราให้ติดเอาไว้ เริ่มแรกเลยเราก็ต้องเอาขาข้างนึงไปล็อคกับบอร์ดไว้ก่อน แต่เมื่อเรายืนอยู่บนบอร์ดปุ๊บ มันก็จะเริ่มไหล ดังนั้นเราต้องเอาขอบของ Snowboard จิกหิมะเอาไว้ ตอนนี้ยังไม่มีอะไรมากเพราะว่ายังมีขาอีกข้างยืนอยู่บนหิมะทำให้ไม่ไหลไปตามภูเขา แต่ถ้าจะเริ่มเล่นจริงแล้วเราจะต้องเอาขาทั้งสองข้างล็อคไว้บนบอร์ด ตอนนี้แหละถ้าหยุดไม่เป็นก็จะไหลไปตามบอร์ดแน่นอน ก็อย่าไปกลัวเพราะว่าคงไปได้ไม่เกินห้าเมตรแล้วต้องล้มอย่างแน่นอน ดังนั้นสถานการณ์แรกสุดก็จะเป็น พยายามหยุดบอร์ดให้นิ่ง เริ่มไหลช้าๆ ล้ม วนไปวนมาจนกว่าจะเป็น

สนามแรกสุดที่พวกเราไปเล่นนั้นอยู่บนภูเขาสูง หิมะตกแรงจัดเลย ดังนั้นไม่นานพวกเราก็เริ่มยอมแพ้และกลับไปนั่งพักผ่อนในอาคาร ก่อนที่จะตัดสินใจลงไปเล่นในสนามที่ตีนเขาเพราะหิมะคงเบากว่า ระหว่างที่นั่งกระเช้าลงมา ก็มีการสนทนากันว่าจะฝึกเล่นอย่างไรดี ซึ่งจังหวะนี้แหละที่ผมได้เรียนรู้ว่า การเริ่มเล่น Snowboard นั้นจริงๆแล้วต้องเริ่มจากการฝึกควบคุมความเร็วของบอร์ดไม่ให้เร็วมากเกินไป เพราะถ้ามันเร็วเกินเราก็จะล้ม ดังนั้นเราจะต้องพยายามเบรคความเร็วของบอร์ดเป็นระยะๆ และท่าที่เบสิกที่สุดสำหรับคนเริ่มเล่นคือ ท่าใบไม้ร่วง ที่จะต้องควบคุมบอร์ดให้ไหลคล้ายกับใบไม้ที่ร่วงลงมาคือไหลไปทางซ้ายที ไปทางขวาที ดังนั้นเมื่อผมลงมาถึงสนามด้านล่างที่หิมะตกแรงน้อยกว่าหน่อย ผมก็เริ่มฝึกท่านี้ทันที จนในที่สุดผมก็เริ่มจับจังหวะของบอร์ดออก และสามารถเล่นท่าใบไม้ล่วงได้สำเร็จ สำหรับผมแล้ว Snowboard เพิ่งจะเริ่มสนุกก็ตอนนี้นี่เอง แต่ว่าก็หมดเวลาเล่นพอดีเพราะสนามใกล้ปิดซ่ะแล้ว

คืนวันนั้นด้วยความเหนื่อยอ่อน เพราะใช้พลังมหาศาลไปกับการเล่น Snowboard ผมก็หลับเป็นตายเตรียมออกเดินทางไป San Francisco พรุ่งนี้

วันที่สามของทริป พวกเราจาก Lake Tahoe มุ่งหน้าเข้าสู่ San Francisco โดยเราจะมีโอกาสได้แวะเมือง Sacramento ที่ผู้ว่ารัฐ California คนปัจจุบันหรือ Arnold Schwarzenegger ทำงานอยู่ แต่ก่อนจะออกจาก Lake Tahoe เราก็ต้องแวะถ่ายรูปและชื่นชมความงามริมทะเลสาบกันหน่อย

เราไปถึง Lake Tahoe เวลาประมาณเที่ยงๆ ทะเลสาบ Lake Tahoe ถูกล้อมรอบไปดูภูเขาที่ปกคลุมด้วยหิมะ ดังนั้นสีของทะเลสาบตัดกับภูเขาที่แซมด้วยสีขาวก็เป็นภาพที่น่าประทับใจไม่น้อย เราแวะถ่ายรูปกันพักใหญ่ก่อนที่จะเดินทางไปยัง Sacramento ต่อไป

ณ Sacramento พวกเรากะว่าจะแวะไปเยี่ยมชมที่ทำงานของ Arnold แต่ปรากฎว่าเมื่อเราไปถึงก็ดึกเลยเวลาที่จะให้เข้าชมไปซ่ะแล้ว ดังนั้นเราจึงได้แค่ถ่ายรูปอยู่ด้านหน้าของตึก ก่อนที่จะมุ่งหน้าเข้าที่พักที่ San Francisco

วันที่ 31 ธันวาคม วันสิ้นปี 2007 แน่นอนว่าพวกเราเตรียมตัวมา countdown ที่ San Francisco นี่เอง ดังนั้นแผนเที่ยววันนี้ก็คือเราจะเที่ยวกันในเมือง San Francisco และเตรียมตัวที่จะออกไปนับถอยหลังข้ามปีที่ Pier

เราเริ่มต้นทัวร์เมือง San Francisco ที่ Golden Gate Bridge อันเป็นสะพานที่โด่งดังประจำเมืองแห่งนี้ จากชื่อของสะพานผมว่าถ้าคนที่ยังไม่เคยเห็นต้องจิตนาการว่ามันเป็นสีทองไม่ก็สีเหลืองๆหน่อยแน่นอน แต่ที่จริงแล้ว Golden Gate นั้นเป็นสีน้ำตาลแดง ชื่อเสียงของ Golden Gate โด่งดังเนื่องมาจากในสมัยก่อน Golden Gate เป็นสะพานที่มีความยาวระหว่างเสาสองต้นมากที่สุด เรียกว่าจากเสาต้นหนึ่งแล้วตัวสะพานยื่นไปในทะเลมากที่สุดก่อนที่จะไปถึงเสาอีกต้นนั่นเอง ความทันสมัยทางด้านวิศวกรรมในการก่อสร้าง Golden Gate ในสมัยนั้นทำให้ Golden Gate กลายเป็นสัญลักษณ์ของ San Francisco ไปเลยทีเดียว

เราแวะถ่ายรูปกันพักใหญ่ที่ Golden Gate โดยที่มีจุดที่น่าสนใจสามจุด จุดแรกเป็นจุดชมวิวฝั่ง San Francisco ก่อนที่เราจะข้ามสะพาน ซึ่งจะได้เห็น Golden Gate จากมุมล่าง จุดที่สองเป็นปลายสะพานเมื่อข้ามสะพานไปแล้ว และจุดสุดท้ายเป็นบนเนินเขาที่จะเห็น Golden Gate ชัดที่สุดจากมุมสูง

เมื่อถ่ายรูปจนหน่ำใจพวกเราก็ย้อนกลับไปยัง Fishermans Wharf ในเมือง San Francisco เนื่องด้วยเป็นเวลาเที่ยงพอดีๆเราเลยไปแวะทานอาหารที่ร้าน Boudin อันเป็นร้านเก่าแก่ชื่อดังในเรื่องขนมปัง หน้าร้านมีการจัดแสดงการปั้นขนมปังเป็นรูปต่างๆ เช่น รูปเต่า รูปจระเข้ ฯลฯ ผสมกับเมื่อมาถึง Fishermans Wharf แล้วนักท่องเที่ยวก็ต้องสั่งอาหารทะเลเป็นธรรมดา ดังนั้นเมนูจึงออกมาเป็น ซุบหอยบนขนมปัง ซึ่งตัวซุบก็อร่อยดีแต่ว่าขนมปังนี่สิรู้สึกแย่ๆยังไงไม่ทราบ สรุปแล้วก็เลยไม่ค่อยประทับใจเท่าไหร่

หลังจากท้องอิ่มก็เป็นเวลาเดินย่อยอาหารตาม Pier ต่างๆ แน่นอนว่าเราต้องไม่พลาด Pier 39 อันเป็นแหล่งช๊อปปิ้งอันชื่อเสียงใน San Francisco แน่นอน ตอนนี้ก็เลยได้เวลาเดินชิลๆกินบรรยากาศวันสิ้นปี ซึ่งมันก็ไม่มีอะไรมากนักแต่สำหรับตัวผมแล้ว ก็เป็นบรรยากาศที่น่าประทับใจไม่น้อยเพราะว่าได้เห็นนักท่องเที่ยวทั้งหลาย ต่างคนก็ต่างพากันมาพักผ่อนกันที่สถานที่แห่งนี้ บ้างก็เดินเลือกซื้อของฝาก บ้างก็ต่อคิวซื้อตั๋วเพื่อขึ้นเรือไปชมคุก Alcatraz บ้างก็ยืนล้อมวงชม Street Performance ส่วนตัวผมเองถึงจะไม่ได้ตั้งใจซื้อของฝากอะไร ก็ได้แต่เดินเก็บภาพบรรยากาศทั่วๆไปเท่านั้น

ในเมื่อมาเดินเล่นอยู่ที่ Fishermans Wharf ทั้งที พวกเพื่อนๆผมก็เลยไม่พลาดที่จะชิมปู อันเป็นอาหารที่ขึ้นชื่อที่สุดของที่นี่ พวกเราสามารถหาปูกินกันได้ง่ายๆจากร้านข้างทางริม Pier เพียงแต่ว่าราคามันแพงเสียเหลือเกิน ปูตัวหนึ่งราคา $30 ได้ ด้วยความที่ผมก็ไม่ได้ชอบกินปูเท่าไหร่ บวกกับเมื่อได้ยินราคาแล้วก็กินไม่ลงเลยทีเดียว ได้แต่สอบถามเพื่อนบางคนที่ซื้อมากิน พวกเค้าก็บอกว่าเนื้อหวานจับใจ ดูท่าจะอร่อยจริงๆ

ใกล้จะถึงเวลาที่เราจะไปนับถอยหลังข้ามปีกันแล้ว ปีนี้จะมีการจุดพลุที่ Pier 3 ซึ่งแน่นอนว่าต้องมีคนมหาศาลไปที่นั่นแน่นอน พวกเราโดนขู่ตั้งแต่เนิ่นๆว่าเราจะต้องจอดรถทิ้งไว้ที่โรงแรมและนั่งรถไฟเข้าไปเท่านั้น เพราะว่าตอนใกล้สิ้นปีที่จอดรถแถวนั้นจะแน่นขนัดอย่างแน่นอน แต่อย่างไรก็ตามด้วยความมุมานะในการวนหาที่จอดของพวกเรา ทำให้เราไปหาที่จอดแถวนั้นได้ตั้งแต่เนิ่นๆ แต่ก็ต้องนอนรอคอยเวลาเที่ยงคืนอยู่ในรถเป็นเวลาสองชั่วโมงได้

ห้าทุ่มกว่าๆก่อนขึ้นปีใหม่ เราเริ่มเดินไปยัง Pier 3 แน่นอนว่าพวกเราไม่มีทางพลาด Pier 3 ไปได้เนื่องจาก ผู้คนจำนวนมากหลั่งไหลไปยังที่แห่งนั้น บรรยากาศรอบตัวครึกครื้นมาก มีเสียงไชโยโห่ร้องเมื่อเวลาเข้าใกล้เที่ยงคืนทุกห้านาที ในที่สุดเราก็เดินไปจนถึง Pier 3 จนได้ เนื่องด้วยผู้คนจำนวนมากอยู่แถวนั้นทำให้การที่จะได้ยืนตำแหน่งดีๆนั้นเป็นไปได้ยาก ตำแหน่งของผมเองถึงแม้จะอยู่ด้านหน้าเกือบสุดแต่ก็ดันมีต้นไม้ขึ้นบังวิวทิวทัศน์ซ่ะนี่ แต่เราก็ขยับไปไหนไม่ได้แล้ว การแสดงพลุเริ่มต้นตอนเที่ยงคืนพอดี พร้อมกับเสียงไชโยโห่ร้อง และเสียง Happy New Year 2008 ดังไปทั่ว เพื่อนผมเปิดแชมเปญฉลองตอนขึ้นปีใหม่พอดี ก็เป็นบรรยากาศการฉลองปีใหม่ที่ค่อนข้างสมบูรณ์แบบเลยทีเดียว น่าเสียดายที่ทำไมตรงจุดนี้ไม่มีการ countdown เมื่อถึงสิบวินาทีสุดท้ายก็ไม่รู้ ทำให้ช่วงเวลานั้นผ่านไปแบบยังไม่ทันตั้งตัวดี การแสดงพลุยังคงดำเนินต่อไปกว่า 20 นาที ก่อนที่จะมีขบวนพาเรดเล็กๆผ่านไป

และแล้วการฉลองขึ้นปีใหม่ที่ Pier 3 ก็จบลง ฝูงชนจำนวนมากก็เริ่มหลั่งไหลออกจากที่แห่งนั้น พวกเราเองก็ต่างเหนื่อยอ่อน เตรียมตัวกลับโรงแรมเพื่อที่จะพักเอาแรงไว้ลุยต่อวันรุ่งขึ้น

ในวันขึ้นปีใหม่ประจำปี 2008 พวกเราต่างตื่นสายด้วยความเหนื่อยอ่อนจากเมื่อคืน วันนี้ที่จริงแล้ววางแผนที่จะไปเที่ยวหลายที่ แต่เนื่องด้วยเป็นวันหยุด ทำให้สถานที่ท่องเที่ยวหลายๆแห่งปิด เลยเหลือแค่แวะเยี่ยมชมมหาลัย Berkeley กับ Stanford ที่ถึงแม้จะปิดแต่ก็ยังเข้าไปเดินชมได้

Winter Trip 2 - Berkeley and Stanford

เราเดินทางขึ้นไปทางเหนือไม่ไกลนักจากตัวเมือง San Francisco เพื่อไปยัง Berkeley พวกเราได้ไปเดินชมมหาลัยและถ่ายรูปตามจุดต่างๆมาไม่น้อยเลยทีเดียว แต่สำหรับผมแล้วตึกและอาคารเรียนใน Berkeley ดูเก่าๆและมีสีสันไม่สวยงามเท่าไหร่เลย คงเป็นเพราะความเก่าแก่ของมหาลัยบวกกับการที่เป็นมหาลัยของรัฐนั่นเอง

จากนั้นเราก็มาแวะเยี่ยมชม Stanford ที่อยู่ทางด้านใต้ของ San Francisco เนื่องจาก Stanford เป็น Private University ภาพที่เห็นเลยแตกต่างจาก Berkeley ลิบลับ ผมรู้สึกว่า Stanford เป็นมหาลัยที่สวยมากเลยทีเดียว ณ จุดที่พวกเราไปจอดรถจะเป็นสนามหญ้ากว้างใหญ่ที่มีลาดดินปลูกดอกไม้ตรงกลาง มองไปด้านนึงจะเห็นตึกของ Stanford เรียงรายกันอยู่ หลายๆคนมาพักผ่อนและออกกำลังกายที่สนามแห่งนี้ เราถ่ายรูปกัน ณ จุดนี้พักนึงก่อนที่จะเดินทัวร์มหาลัย อาคารในมหาลัยสีน้ำตาลอ่อนๆงดงามมาก ลวดลายต่างๆที่วาดประดับตัวอาคารก็ดูสวยงามยิ่งนัก นอกมากนี้แล้วเรายังได้มีโอกาสแวะไปเยี่ยมชมตึก Engineering ของ Stanford อีกด้วย

จากนั้นเราก็เดินทางกลับไปที่พักที่ San Francisco คืนนี้จะเป็นคืนสุดท้ายก่อนที่จะอำลาเมืองนี้เพื่อขับรถตามริมชายฝั่งไปยัง Monterey แล้วกลับ Los Angeles

วันที่ 2 มกราคม เป็นวันสุดท้ายที่เราจะได้อยู่ในเมือง San Francisco ซึ่งก็ยังพอมีเวลาอยู่บ้างให้เราได้เดินช๊อปปิ้งใน Downtown ฉลองปีใหม่

เราเริ่มเดินทัวร์ Downtown ที่ Union Square ซึ่งเป็นแหล่งช๊อปปิ้งที่เต็มไปด้วยห้างและร้านค้าแบรนเนมต่างๆ เช่น Gap Abercrombie ฯลฯ ผมเองซึ่งไม่ได้ตั้งใจที่จะซื้ออะไรก็ขอเดินเล่นถ่ายรูปตามแบบของผมเองดีกว่า สิ่งที่น่าสนใจอย่างหนึ่งก็คือรถรางที่ขึ้นชื่อในเมือง San Francisco นี่เอง คนที่นี่เรียกมันว่า Muni และที่ปลายสถานีของรถรางสายหนึ่งใน Downtown นี้เอง ผมก็ได้พบว่ามีนักท่องเที่ยวจำนวนมากที่อยากขึ้นรถรางนี้สักครั้ง ทำให้แถวขึ้นรถรางที่บรรจุคนได้ไม่มากนักยาวเหยียดเลยทีเดียว

จาก Downtown เราออกจาก San Francisco และมุ่งหน้าไปสู่ San Jose เป้าหมายหลักของผมที่เมืองนี้ก็คือ การที่จะได้เห็นบริษัท Google นั่นเอง ซึ่งก็ไม่มีอะไรมากมาย เพราะแน่นอนว่าเค้าไม่ให้คนภายนอกเข้าไปภายในบริษัท ดังนั้นเราดึงได้แต่มองดูจากด้านนอกและถ่ายรูปคู่กับป้าย Google เท่านั้น

จาก San Jose เราขับรถยาวลงไปถึงเมืองริมชายฝั่ง Monterey เพื่อที่จะพักที่นี่หนึ่งคือ ก่อนที่จะขับรถยาวเรียบชายฝั่งกลับไปยัง Los Angeles

7th Day

วันสุดท้ายของการเดินทาง พวกเราจะต้องมุ่งหน้ากลับไปยัง Los Angeles เสียแล้ว แต่วันนี้จะเป็นการขับรถเรียบริมชายฝั่งเพื่อที่จะชมความงามของทะเลไปตลอดทาง แต่ท้องฟ้าวันนี้ช่างไม่เป็นใจเอาซ่ะเลยเพราะเมฆตั้งเค้าเต็มฟ้าตลอดเวลา บดบังแสงจากดวงอาทิตย์ ทำให้ภาพชายฝั่งที่เห็นดูหม่นหมองไม่น่าดูเอาซ่ะเลย แต่ก็ยังมีบางช่วงที่ยังพอมีแสงลอดลงมาให้เราได้ถ่ายรูปกันบ้าง

ไม่ไกลจาก Monterey นัก เราขับรถเข้าไปชมวิวในถนนที่เรียกว่า 17 Mile Dr ด้วยความที่เมฆตั้งเค้า คลื่นที่นี่เลยดูแรงและเกรี้ยวกราดอย่างมาก แต่ไม่น่าเชื่อว่าก็ยังมีคนลงไปเล่น Surf ท้าคลื่นอยู่ในทะเล เราหยุดถ่ายรูปกันริมหาดเป็นพักๆ ทะเลที่นี่ถึงแม้จะสวยเทียบไม่ได้เลยกับทะเลบ้านเรา แต่ก็ยังมีมุมให้ถ่ายรูปอยู่บ้าง หลังจากที่เราออกจากหาดแห่งนี้ท้องฟ้าก็ไม่เป็นใจให้ถ่ายรูปอีกเลยเพราะว่าฝนลงเม็ดตลอดเวลา ดังนั้นเราจึงต้องมุ่งหน้ากลับ Los Angeles ด้วยบรรยากาศที่หม่นหมองเป็นอันปิดการเดินทางเจ็ดวันในทริปที่สอง

เจ็ดวันของการท่องเที่ยวตามริมชายฝั่งตะวันตกของ California ผมเองได้เรียนรู้และเก็บเกี่ยวประสบการณ์ บรรยากาศชีวิตของผู้คนในแถบนี้ไม่น้อยเลยทีเดียว วันที่สนุกสนานที่สุดคงเป็นวันที่ผมได้ไปเล่น Snowboard เพราะว่าสำหรับผมแล้ว มันเป็นประสบการณ์แปลกใหม่ที่สุด ที่ทำให้ผมได้เรียนรู้อะไรต่างๆเพิ่มขึ้นอีกมากมาย แน่นอนว่าโอกาสหน้าที่พวกเราจะไปเล่น Snowboard กัน ผมคงไม่พลาดอย่างแน่นอน

แต่ในที่สุดเทศกาลแห่งการท่องเที่ยวก็สิ้นสุด พวกเราทุกคนก็กลับมาพักผ่อนที่บ้านของตัวเองใน Los Angeles ตัวผมเองนั้นยังมีเวลาอีกประมาณอาทิตย์กว่าก่อนที่จะเปิดเทอม ก็คงมีเรื่องที่จะต้องทำไม่มากก็น้อย แต่ก่อนอื่นผมก็ต้องนั่งรวมรูปที่ไปถ่ายมาทั้งหมดเสียก่อน นับไปนับมาแล้วรวมสองทริปผมมีรูปทั้งหมด 2,212 รูป ถ้ารวมกับกล้องของคนอื่นอีกคงมีมากมายมหาศาล รูปเหล่านี้คงจะช่วยเก็บความทรงจำและประสบการณ์ของการเดินทาง 12 คืน 13 วันครั้งนี้ของผมไว้ เผื่อในอนาคตผมจะหันย้อนกลับมาดูมันอีกครั้งหนึ่ง

Winter Trip

เมื่อการสอบสิ้นสุดลง เหล่าบรรดานักเรียน SC ก็ต่างวางแผนที่จะใช้เวลาช่วงปิดเทอม Fall ที่มีประมาณหนึ่งเดือนให้คุ้มค่ากับการเรียนและการสอบที่สุดแสนจะทรมาน ผมเองก็เตรียมตัวที่จะไปท่องฝั่งตะวันตกของอเมริกาพร้อมกับรุ่นพี่ Com Sci ที่นี่เช่นกัน ทริปของเราแบ่งออกเป็นสองทริป เนื่องจากสมาชิกบางคนมีภารกิจอื่นที่ต้องทำ ทำให้ไม่สามารถร่วมเดินทางได้ตลอด 13 วัน โดยทริปแรกนั้นจะใช้เวลาหกวัน เราจะเดินทางผ่านสี่รัฐด้วยกัน ได้แก่ California Nevada Utah และ Arizona ส่วนทริปที่สองนั้นจะใช้เวลาอีกเจ็ดวัน ซึ่งจะเป็นการเดินทางเรียบริมฝั่งทะเลของ California โดยรวมทั้งสองทริปแล้วเป็นการเดินทางมากกว่า 2,000 ไมล์ (มากกว่า 3,200 กิโลเมตร) นี่เป็นครั้งแรกในชีวิตที่ผมจะได้เดินทางโดยรถยนต์ไกลขนาดนี้

First Trip

Los Angeles -> Las Vegas -> Bryce Canyon -> Page -> South Rim Grand Canyon -> Grand Canyon West -> Las Vegas -> Hoover Dam

สำหรับทริปแรกนั้นเราจะออกเดินทางจาก Los Angeles วิ่งตามถนน I-15 เข้ารัฐ Nevada เพื่อไปยัง Las Vegas จากนั้นเราก็จะไป Bryce Canyon และ Page ที่ Utah แล้วเราก็จะวิ่งไปตามถนนสาย 89 เข้า Arizona เพื่อไปยัง South Rim Grand Canyon ก่อนที่จะย้อนกลับไปยัง Las Vegas อีกครั้งนึง และระหว่างทางกลับไป Las Vegas นี้พวกเราก็จะได้แวะ Grand Canyon West พร้อมกับ Hoover Dam อีกด้วย

1st Day

ทริปแรกเริ่มต้นในวันที่ 22 ธันวาคม 2007 พวกเราออกเดินทางกันตอนสายๆเพื่อไป Las Vegas ซึ่งในตอนแรกนั้นเรากะว่าจะไปถึง Las Vegas ก่อนมืด แต่ปรากฎว่าเราต้องเผอิญรถติดตลอดทาง คงเป็นเพราะทุกคนต่างหากันไปฉลองคริสมาสต์ที่ Las Vegas เลยทำให้พวกเราไปถึงตอนทุ่มกว่าๆ ก็เลยมีเวลาอยู่ที่นี่ไม่มากนัก แต่ก็ไม่เป็นไรเพราะว่าขากลับเราจะมาพักที่ Las Vegas กันอีกหนึ่งคืน เพื่อเป็นการช่วยเหลือเพื่อนที่ขับรถไม่ให้ทรมานมากเกินไป

Winter Trip 1 - Las Vegas

พูดถึง Las Vegas แน่นอนว่าทุกๆคนก็คงรู้จักและได้ยินคำร่ำลือกันมาไม่มากก็น้อย แต่ก็คงจะดีกว่าถ้าเราได้มาพิสูจน์ด้วยตาของตัวเองพร้อมทั้งเก็บเกี่ยวประสบการณ์และบรรยากาศที่นี่ไป แน่นอนว่าคนที่หลงใหลในแสงสี คงจะต้องติดอกติดใจกับ Las Vegas อย่างแน่นอน สีสันใน Las Vegas นั้นจะเริ่มต้นเมื่อแสงอาทิตย์หมดลง ตึกรามบ้านช่องและอาคารตามท้องถนนต่างๆ โดยเฉพาะ Las Vegas Boulevard จะพากันอวดแสงสีสันต่างๆที่ได้ประดับประดาให้นักท่องเที่ยวได้ชื่นชม ช่างเป็นภาพที่งดงามตระการตายิ่งนัก ทำให้คืนที่เดินเที่ยว Las Vegas เป็นคืนที่มีความสุขมากๆสำหรับคนที่หลงรักการถ่ายรูปยามค่ำคืนอย่างผม ถนน Las Vegas Boulevard แห่งนี้ยังเป็นที่ตั้งของโรงแรมและคาสิโนอีกนับไม่ถ้วน โดยแต่ละโรงแรมจะสร้างสรรค์ตาม Theme ต่างๆที่สุดแสนจะจินตนาการ บางโรงแรมเช่น Luxor สร้างตัวโรงแรมเป็นรูปปิระมิดตาม Theme อียิปต์ บางโรงแรมเช่น Caesar สร้างเป็น Theme โรมันตกแต่งด้วยรูปปั้นโรมันโบราณต่างๆได้อย่างงดงาม บางโรงแรมเช่น Bellagio ตกแต่งสวนภายในโรงแรมเผื่อรับเทศกาลคริสมาสต์ได้อย่างตระการตา

นอกจากนี้แล้วชั้นล่างสุดของทุกโรงแรมจะเปิดเป็นคาสิโน เพื่อต้อนรับนักเสี่ยงโชคทั้งหลายที่เข้ามาพักพร้อมได้เสี่ยงโชคที่โรงแรมของตนได้ทันที ผมเองก็ได้เห็นการพนันหลายชนิดในคาสิโน แต่ไม่สามารถแยกแยะออกได้ว่าอะไรคืออะไร รู้จักก็แค่ Slot Machine กับ Casino War เท่านั้น ในส่วนของ Casino War เองผมได้มีโอกาสสำรวจอย่างใกล้ชิด คือดูเพื่อนเล่น ได้เห็นการหมุนเวียนของเงินที่รวดเร็วจนน่าตกใจ ไม่ถึงสิบนาทีเงิน $100 อาจจะหายวับไปกับตาได้

แหล่งความบันเทิงใน Las Vegas ยังไม่หมดแค่นั้น ที่นี่ยังเป็นศูนย์รวมของการแสดงที่คล้ายกับละครเวทีอันหรูหราอีกมากมาย การจะเข้าไปดูการแสดงแต่ละครั้งนั้นจะต้องเตรียมเงินไว้ประมาณ $100 แต่ก็นับว่าคุ้มทีเดียวสำหรับการแสดงที่ยิ่งใหญ่ที่บรรจงสร้างสรรค์มาอย่างดี ผมเองมีโอกาสสัมผัสกับบรรยากาศแบบนี้เมื่อสองปีก่อนที่ New York City เมื่อผมเข้าชม Phantom of the Opera มาคราวนี้เลยตัดสินใจไม่ยอมให้เงิน $100 หลุดจากกระเป๋าไป สำหรับเพื่อนผมบางคนได้เข้าชมการแสดง Le Reve ที่โรงแรม Wynn ก็เล่าว่าได้เก็บเกี่ยวความประทับไปไม่น้อยเลยทีเดียว

คืนนั้นผมได้ไปเดินเที่ยวในตัวเมืองนิดหน่อย และได้ดูการแสดงอุโมงค์ไฟที่เหมือนบุผนังอุโมงค์ด้วยจอทีวีขนาดยักษ์ ก่อนที่จะกลับไปพักผ่อนเตรียมตัวออกเดินทางแต่เช้าในวันพรุ่งนี้

วันรุ่งขึ้นพวกเราออกเดินทางจาก Las Vegas แต่เช้าเพื่อไป Zion National Park และ Bryce Canyon National Park ก่อนที่จะไปพักที่เมือง Page ซึ่งวันนี้เรารู้ตัวล่วงหน้าแล้วว่าจะได้ไปเจอกับอากาศเย็นยะเยือกบน National Park และได้เจอกับหิมะแน่นอน

Zion National Park แห่งนี้ก็เป็นหุบเขาที่สวยงามแห่งหนึ่งที่เราจะได้ขับรถผ่านและแวะชมความงดงามของหุบเขาเป็นจุดๆไป และที่นี่เองเมื่อเราขับรถขึ้นไปบนภูเขา พวกเราได้เห็นหิมะเป็นครั้งแรก สีขาวของหิมะที่แซมๆตามสีน้ำตาลแดงของภูเขาก็เป็นภาพที่งดงามเลยทีเดียว

เราไม่ได้ใช้เวลามากนักกับ Zion เพราะได้ยินว่า Bryce Canyon จะงดงามกว่ามาก ซึ่งก็เป็นจริงอย่างที่ร่ำลือ เราไปถึง Bryce Canyon ก่อนพระอาทิตย์ตกประมาณชั่วโมงสองชั่วโมง เนื่องด้วยพวกเราวางแผนที่จะมาชมพระอาทิตย์ตกที่นี่ เมื่อพวกเรามาถึงอากาศก็หนาวจัดซ่ะแล้ว รอยหิมะที่แซมอยู่ตามสีของภูเขากลายเป็นน้ำแข็งที่ปกคลุมสีของภูเขาไปซ่ะแล้ว อุณหภูมิที่อ่านได้จากเครื่องวัดคือ -2 องศา ซึ่งถ้ามีเสื้อซักสองชั้นพร้อมกับเสื้อหนาวหนาๆหน่อย ก็สามารถอยู่ได้อย่างสบายๆ แต่เมื่อเราขึ้นไปบน Canyon ทุกอย่างก็ไม่ได้ง่ายดายอย่างนั้นซ่ะแล้ว ลมแรงที่พัดเข้ามาปะทะทำให้เหมือนอยู่ในที่ที่ -10 องศา ทำให้พวกเราต้องพยายามปกปิดทุกส่วนอย่างมิดชิด โดยเฉพาะใบหน้าและมือ ผมเองซื้อถุงมือรุ่นที่อุ่นที่สุดมาราคา $30 แต่ก็ยังไม่วายหนาวจนปวดปลายนิ้วมือจนได้ รองเท้าที่ไม่กันน้ำของผมเมื่อเหยียบโดนน้ำแข็งทำให้ความชื้นและความหนาวทะลุทลวงเข้าไปถึงปลายนิ้วเท้า ช่างหนาวทรมานจริงๆ อีกทั้งทางเดินก็ยังเป็นน้ำแข็ง บางส่วนลื่นและอันตราย แต่ก็ยังดีที่มีรั่วกั้นไว้ไม่ให้ตกเหวไปได้ง่ายๆ อย่างไรก็ตามทุกคนก็ยังพยายามเผิชญลมและความหนาวเดินไปถึงจุดชมวิวที่อยู่ริมผาจนได้

Bryce Canyon เป็นหุบเขาที่ภายในมีหินงอกเรียงรายกันขึ้นมา ก็เป็นภาพที่งดงามพอสมควรเลยทีเดียว เราเร่งรีบถ่ายรูปกันอยู่พักนึงก่อนที่จะทนความหนาวเหน็บไม่ไหว ล่าถอยกลับขึ้นรถและเปิดฮีสเตอร์อุ่นๆเพื่อคลายความหนาว แต่ความทรมานยังไม่จบเมื่อจุดชมพระอาทิตย์ตกต่อไปก็ไม่ได้หนาวน้อยไปกว่าจุดนี้เลย ณ จุดชมพระอาทิตย์ เป็นจุดที่ช่างงดงามและประทับใจยิ่งนัก เนื่องจากที่ฝั่งตรงข้ามกับมุมที่พระอาทิตย์ตกมีพระจันทร์เต็มดวงขึ้นมาฉายแสงอยู่เหนือเวิ้งหุบเขา ช่างเป็นภาพที่สวยงามเหมือนกับภาพวาดที่บรรจงแต่งแต้มมาอย่างดีเลยทีเดียว เราขึ้นไปถ่ายรูปกันสักพักนึงก่อนที่จะแพ้ให้กับความหนาวและล่าถอยกลับมา

หลังจากนั้นเราก็มุ่งหน้าสู่ Page ซึ่งก็มีเรื่องตื่นเต้นเล็กน้อยให้ได้ลุ้นกัน เนื่องจากค่ำแล้วและถนนที่ไม่รู้จักก็เริ่มดูน่ากลัว อีกทั้ง GPS ที่ใช้นำทางในการขับรถยังนำขบวนรถของเราไปทางที่ดูเหมือนจะพาเราเข้าป่าซ่ะนี่ สรุปแล้วเลยต้องเสียเวลาวิ่งย้อนกลับทางเดิมและตามหาถนนใหญ่ไปสู่ Page

เรื่องยังไม่จบแค่นั้นเมื่อที่พักที่ Page นั้นช่างหายากเหลือเกิน ทางที่จะพาเข้าไปสู่ที่พักก็ไม่มีไฟตามถนน เหมือนขับลุยเข้าไปในหุบเขาที่ไม่รู้จะมีทางออกรึเปล่า ป้ายบอกทางไปที่พักก็ไม่มี เลยเกิดเรื่องวุ่นๆให้ต้องวนหาที่พักกันยกใหญ่ แต่สุดท้ายก็ไปถึงที่พักริม Lake Powell ได้อย่างปลอดภัย

Antelope Canyon ถือเป็นไฮไลต์ของวันเลยทีเดียว เพราะเป็นจุดที่มีชื่อเสียงโด่งดัง ที่บรรดานักท่องเที่ยวและช่างถ่ายรูปทั้งหลายต่างชื่นชอบ Antelope Canyon เป็นเขาเล็กๆ ไม่สูงมากสองลูกที่ยื่นเข้ามาหากัน ทำให้เกินช่องด้านล่างคล้ายถ้ำที่สามารถให้คนเดินผ่านเข้าไปได้ ความงดงามของมันอยู่ที่สีสัน ลวดลายของหิน และแสงที่ส่องลอดช่องหินลงมา ซึ่งทั้งสามผสมผสานกันได้อย่างลงตัวออกมาเป็นภาพที่งดงามดึงดูดช่างภาพทั้งหลายให้มาสร้างสรรค์ผลงานของตัวเองที่นี่ การจะเข้าไป Antelope Canyon นั้นต้องไปกับทัวร์เท่านั้น ซึ่งโดยส่วนตัวแล้วไม่ชอบเลยเพราะว่าทำให้มีเวลาจำกัดไม่สามารถเล็งและถ่ายรูปนานๆได้ อีกทั้งนักท่องเที่ยวก็ยังเยอะอีกด้วยทำให้การถ่ายรูปดีๆ ยิ่งยากขึ้นเข้าไปใหญ่

หลังจากนั้นเราก็ไปแวะที่ Horseshoe Bend กัน ซึ่งเป็นจุดที่แม่น้ำ Colorado ไหลโค้งผ่านหุบเขาที่เหมือนรูปเกือกม้าไป หุบเขาที่นี่ดูยิ่งใหญ่ตระการตามากๆ เหวลึกเบื้องหน้าที่นำไปสู่แม่น้ำก็ดูน่าหวาดเสียวสุดๆ พวกเราหยุดถ่ายรูปกันที่นี่สักพักให้สมกับความตระการตาของ Horseshoe Bend จากนั้นเราก็ย้อนกลับไปยัง Lake Powell เพื่อดูพระอาทิตย์ลับขอบฟ้าที่นั่น

วันนี้ที่จริงแล้วเป็นวันคริสมาตส์ครั้งแรกในอเมริกาของผม ซึ่งความใฝ่ฝันแรกสุดคือจะไปเดินเที่ยวดูแสงไฟและบรรยากาศในตัวเมือง แต่ในที่สุดก็ต้องมาจบอยู่ที่เมืองที่เงียบสงบ กินบรรยากาศธรรมชาติที่ Page ขาดความรื่นเริงและสีสัน นับว่าเป็นเรื่องน่าผิดหวังทีเดียวสำหรับผม แต่อย่างน้อยก็ได้ฉลองคริสมาสต์กับเพื่อนที่สนิทที่สุดที่นี่ คืนวันคริสมาตส์ผ่านไปด้วยการล้อมวงเล่นไพ่อย่างสนุกสนานเฮฮา

ในวันที่สี่ของทริปนี้กรุ๊ปของเราจะได้ขึ้นไปดูความยิ่งใหญ่ของ Grand Canyon กันแล้ว ช่วงนี้ North rim ของ Grand Canyon ปิด เราเลยต้องไปดูทาง South rim แทน พวกเราไปถึง Grand Canyon กันตอนประมาณเที่ยงๆ อากาศที่นั่นหนาวเหน็บมาก (แต่ยังรู้สึกว่าลมยังไม่เย็นเท่า Bryce Canyon) ที่ Grand Canyon นี้เราแวะชมอยู่สองจุดคือที่ Desert View และ Yavapai Point ก่อนที่จะเข้าพักที่ Yavapai Resort

Grand Canyon เป็นหุบเขาที่โด่งดังของอเมริกาเนื่องมากจากความยิ่งใหญ่ของหุบเขา ซึ่งเมื่อตอนที่ได้เป็นเห็นด้วยตาก็ตื่นเต้นกับความยิ่งใหญ่ของมันไม่น้อยทีเดียว จุดแรกที่เราไปคือ Desert View ที่มีหอคอยให้นักท่องเที่ยวปีนขึ้นไปชม Grand Canyon จากมุมสูงบนหอคอยได้ ภาพที่เห็นคือ หุบเขากว้างใหญ่สุดลูกหูลูกตา มีแม่น้ำไหลผ่านอยู่ตรงกลางๆของหุบเขา และจุดที่สองคือ Yavapai Point ที่มีทางเดินริมหน้าผา ให้นักท่องเที่ยวให้เดินชม Grand Canyon ได้หลายมุม อย่างไรก็ตามในความรู้สึกของตัวผมนั้น ความกว้างใหญ่ของ Grand Canyon นี่แหละคือความน่าเบื่อของมันเอง เพราะหลังจากที่รู้สึกตื่นเต้นกับภาพความยิ่งใหญ่ที่อยู่ตรงหน้าแล้ว ไม่ว่าเราจะเปลี่ยนไปดูมันจากมุมไหน Grand Canyon ก็ยังคงมองแล้วเหมือนเดิม ดูน่าเบื่อ ทุกๆจุดของมันดูคล้ายกันไปหมด ไม่มีอะไรที่โดดเด่นออกมา ภาพที่ผมพยายามถ่ายมาก็ดูเหมือนกันไปหมด ไม่สามารถสร้างสรรค์มุมที่ดูแปลกใหม่ได้

คืนวันนั้นเราพักที่ Yavapai Resort ซึ่งอยู่ใน Grand Canyon National Park อากาศคืนนั้นหนาวเย็นที่สุดที่ผมเคยผ่านมา แต่ด้วยว่าพวกเราอยู่ในที่พักก็เลยไม่ค่อยรู้สึกเท่าไหร่ มารู้ตัวอีกทีก็วันรุ่งขึ้นที่เดินออกมาเห็นเกล็ดน้ำแข็งเกาะอยู่เต็มรถ แล้วพอเปิดรถเข้าไป ขวดน้ำที่วางทิ้งไว้ในรถกลับกลายเป็นขวดน้ำแข็งไปได้ ช่างน่าตกใจเสียจริงๆ

วันที่ห้าเราเดินทางออกจาก South rim Grand Canyon เพื่อกลับไปยัง Las Vegas และระหว่างทางก็จะแวะไป Skywalk ที่อยู่ทาง Grand Canyon West เพื่อชม Grand Canyon เป็นครั้งสุดท้าย

ทางเข้าไปยัง Grand Canyon West นั้นบางส่วนยังเป็นถนนลูกรังอยู่ ซึ่งดูไม่เหมาะกับสถานที่ท่องเที่ยวราคาค่อนข้างแพงในประเทศอเมริกาเอาซ่ะเลย แต่พวกเราก็ยังตะลุยเข้าไปจนถึงจนได้ จุดประสงค์ของการบุกตะลุย Grand Canyon West ก็เพื่อที่จะไปชม Skywalk ที่เป็นทางเดินกระจกที่สร้างเป็นรูปเกือกม้ายื่นเข้าไปในหุบเหวของ Grand Canyon และที่น่าสนใจคือสิ่งก่อสร้างนี้เป็นสมบัติของชนเผ่า Hualapai ที่ว่ากันว่าสร้างขึ้นและจัดการโดยสมาชิกในเผ่านี้ ซึ่งในความคิดเห็นผมแล้ว ไม่น่าเชื่อที่ชนเผ่าๆหนึ่งจะมีอำนาจทางการเงิน และความสามารถในการสร้างและดูแล Skywalk ได้ ไม่ต้องสงสัยเลยว่าค่าเข้าชม Skywalk จะแพงขนาดไหน เริ่มแรกเลยเราต้องซื้อตั๋วเพื่อนั่งรถบัสขึ้นไปยัง Grand Canyon West ซึ่งราคา $50 ได้ หลังจากนั้นถ้าอยากจะขึ้นไปเดินบน Skywalk ก็ต้องจ่ายเงินอีก $25 และยังห้ามเอากล้องถ่ายรูปขึ้นไปถ่ายอีกด้วย ถ้าอยากได้รูปก็ต้องซื้อรูปที่เค้าถ่ายให้อีก เรียกว่าขูดกันทุกขั้นทุกตอนเลยทีเดียว

เมื่อขึ้นไปข้างบน Canyon จุดน่าสนใจจุดแรกเป็นภูเขาที่ดูคล้ายรูปนกอินทรีย์ ซึ่งก็ไม่รู้ว่าน่าสนใจมากมายตรงไหน แต่พวกเราก็หยุดถ่ายรูปกันพักใหญ่เลยทีเดียว จากนั้นผมก็ได้เห็น Skywalk ของจริง ความรู้สึกแรกสุดคือ ทำไมมันเล็กขนาดนี้ ดูไม่น่าตื่นเต้นเลยถ้าได้ขึ้นไปยืนบนนั้น บวกกับห้ามนักท่องเที่ยวถ่ายรูปบนนั้นอีกด้วย ในที่สุดพวกเราเกือบทั้งหมดก็เลยตัดสินใจไม่ขึ้น Skywalk

เมื่อไม่ขึ้น Skywalk พวกเราก็เลยมีเวลาเหลืออยู่ค่อนข้างเยอะหน่อย เรานั่งรถบัสไปยังจุดชมวิวและรับประทานอาหาร ซึ่งจุดชมวิวจุดนี้นับว่าเป็นจุดชมวิวที่น่าประทับใจจริงๆ เพราะมันเป็นคล้ายๆภูเขาเล็กๆสองลูกที่สามารถเดินขึ้นไปได้ และรอบๆภูเขาทั้งสองลูกก็ล้อมรอบด้วย Canyon พวกเราใช้เวลาอยู่พักใหญ่ในการบรรจงเลือกมุมและสร้างสรรค์รูปที่แปลกๆใหม่ๆ ก่อนที่จะเดินทางออกจาก Grand Canyon West เมื่อพระอาทิตย์กำลังลับขอบฟ้า

จาก Grand Canyon West พวกเรามุ่งหน้าสู่ Las Vegas เมืองที่ผมชื่นชอบ คืนนี้ผมจะได้เดินชมเมืองและบรรจงถ่ายรูปอีกหนึ่งคืน แต่อย่างไรก็ตามจุดที่น่าสนใจใน Las Vegas มันมีมากมายเหลือเกิน ถึงจะใช้เวลาเดินทั้งคืนผมก็ยังไม่สามารถเก็บภาพได้หมด ผมเดินถ่ายรูปจนถึงตีสาม สุดท้ายก็กลับไปนอนตายเตรียมออกเดินทางพรุ่งนี้แปดโมงเช้า

วันนี้เป็นวันสุดท้ายของทริปแรก ดังนั้นเวลาส่วนใหญ่จะต้องเสียไปกับการเดินทางจาก Las Vegas กลับ Los Angeles แต่ผมก็ยังไม่วายได้มีโอกาสแวะไปเที่ยว Hoover Dam ก่อนกลับ โดยต้องแลกกับการอดหลับอดนอน เพราะต้องตื่นตั้งแต่เจ็ดโมงเช้า เดินทางไปยัง Hoover Dam ซึ่งก็ไม่ไกลจาก Las Vegas มากนัก

Hoover Dam เป็นเขื่อนขนาดมหึมาที่คอยควบคุมระดับน้ำในแม่น้ำ Colorado อีกทั้งยังเป็นโรงปั่นไฟฟ้าที่คอยให้แสงสว่างกับผู้คนจำนวนหลายล้านหลังคาเรือนใน California ตอนใต้อีกด้วย บนตัวเขื่อนเป็นถนนที่เปิดให้รถทั่วไปวิ่งผ่าน ซึ่งเป็นต้นเหตุของรถติดบนถนนเส้นนั้น เนื่องจากถนนนั้นเป็นถนนเลนเดียว แถมยังขดเคี้ยว อีกทั้งนักท่องเที่ยวหลายคนยังฉลอรถเพื่อชื่นชมเขื่อนอีกด้วย ที่จริงแล้วตัวเขื่อนเองก็ไม่ได้มีความน่าสนใจเท่าไหร่ นอกจากขนาดมหึมาของเขื่อนเท่านั้น แต่สิ่งที่น่าสนใจของ Hoover Dam คือเขื่อนนี้เป็นที่ถ่ายทำของหนัง Hollywood หลายเรื่อง โดยเฉพาะเรื่องล่าสุด Transformer ซึ่ง Hoover Dam เป็นฐานทับลับที่เก็บตัวร้ายในเรื่องเอาไว้ การที่เขื่อนนี้ได้เป็นฉากถ่ายทำหนังได้ดึงดูดนักท่องเที่ยวหลายต่อหลายคนให้แวะมาเยี่ยม Hoover Dam สักครั้ง

เมื่อพวกเราไปถึง Hoover Dam เราได้ซื้อทัวร์ราคา $11 เพื่อเข้าชมภายในเขื่อน ทัวร์เริ่มต้นด้วยการฉายหนังเล่าถึงประวัติและความสำคัญของเขื่อน จากนั้นเราก็ลงลิฟต์เข้าไปชมเขื่อน ผมได้เห็นโครงสร้างคร่าวๆของ Hoover Dam ได้ชมหม้อแปลงปั่นไฟฟ้า ซึ่งทั้งหมดก็ไม่ได้ดึงดูดความสนใจของผมเท่าไหร่ และแล้วทัวร์ก็สิ้นสุดลงพวกผมก็ออกไปเดินเล่นถ่ายรูปกันที่ด้านบนของเขื่อน แล้วก็กลับไปหาเพื่อนๆที่เหลือที่ Las Vegas เตรียมเดินทางกลับ Los Angeles อันเป็นจุดสิ้นสุดของการเดินทางครั้งแรก

หกวันกับการเดินทางผ่านสี่รัฐ California Nevada Utah และ Arizona ผมก็ได้เก็บเกี่ยวประสบการณ์ใหม่ๆ พร้อมกับภาพความทรงจำ และความประทับใจ สำหรับตัวผมเองแล้ว ค่ำคืนที่พวกเราไปเหยียบ Las Vegas Boulevard นั้นเป็นคืนที่สนุกสนานและน่าจดจำที่สุดเลยทีเดียว ถ้ามีโอกาสคราวหน้าผมก็คงจะไม่พลาดโอกาสนั้นอย่างแน่นอน สำหรับสถานที่ท่องเที่ยวอื่นๆ Antelope Canyon กับ Grand Canyon ก็เป็นที่ที่คุ้มค่าถ้าผมจะแวะไปตอกย้ำภาพในความทรงจำอีกครั้งนึง เมื่อเรากลับมาถึง Las Vegas ก็ถึงเวลาลาจากเพื่อนๆของเราบางคนที่ร่วมเดินทางไปด้วยกันหกวัน พร้อมกับต้อนรับสมาชิกใหม่ที่จะเข้าร่วมทริปที่สอง ผมกลับไปจัดกระเป๋าเตรียมอุปกรณ์กันหิมะต่างๆ เพราะคราวนี้เราจะไปเล่น Snowboard กัน

At last, I have a chance to shot a photo at my campus. A lot of time that I just passed and took only some photos. But, today, I wake up at 6 and head to the USC campus before the sun rises. Within two hours, I take more than 200 photos. However, recently, I realize that my skill is dropping. I hope that this album will be better than my previous albums.

Getting a driver license

You may be surprised why I write too many blogs recently. The answer is that I have one study week to study for my final exam which I have two subjects on. I therefore have plenty of time (actually, I just pretend that I have lots of time because I do not want to read boring books.) So, I just got an interim driver license today after I had passed the driving test. And, this blog will briefly tell you how to get one if you are in California (obviously, it is common knowledge for people living here.)

First, you have to take a paper test which evaluates your knowledge in driving rules and traffic signs as one in Thailand. Just go to DMV office, pay $27, and get the test. Importantly, the paper test will not be given after 4.30 p.m., so make sure that you plan a lot of time to pass all processes at DMV. In California, we have a Thai version paper test and also the old exam of this test. So, just remember all old exams and you will be able to get full marks in this test. It is not the hard one.

Second, you have to make an appointment for a behind-the-wheel driving test and this can be done online via DMV’s website. And, you should to practice driving to get familiar with new rules here. For example, how to stop at the stop sign or how to turn left and right at the junction since it is different from rules in Thailand. Then, we have to know the hand sign – how to give a hand signal to turn right, left, and stop – a tester will ask you about that. Next, you have to know where your car’s emergency break, head light, defroster, and so on are. Then, you will start driving. The tester will tell you where to turn left or right. Try not to violate a critical error because you will fail immediately (as I used to once.) This is the hardest part in my opinion because I do not know all critical errors. Although all errors are stated, you do not know the real situation causing those errors. So, learn from others’ experience is required. Wish you luck!!

PS: Even though I have a driver license, I do not have a car here.

One semester almost passed

Only two weeks from now, my first semester at USC (also in the America) will end. I’ve lived my life here for four months. However, I realize that my speaking skill doesn’t improve so much because I usually spend time with my Thai friends. I’m so worry about it and think that I’ll try to practice harder. At least, I will talk to myself in English. But, this story is not about my English skill. It is about the perspective on the educational system here from my viewpoint. What have I learned here? Why is it so interesting to study abroad? What are the differences between our educational system and here one?

First of all, the education here is more intensive than one in Thailand. This is not resulting from taking a Master’s course, but the professor here tends to give students more practice which is very important in computer science. In some courses, we have to turn homework in every week, while other courses require at least three projects to finish the course. This project allows us to learn the material in depth; gain more programming experience; and get better understanding the new perspective of a subject. Moreover, every project assigning to students is very useful, practical, and well prepared. For example, the second project of my database course is a spatial database application - a very simplification of GIS (Geographical Information System) such as Google map. I’ve gained lots of knowledge and motivations to further study in this area from this project.

Second, in America, you can see a concrete example of what you have studied very easily. This is resulting from many innovative technologies have been implemented in the real world companies. And then, the professor can provide us the realistic examples of the concept discussed in class. Students can immediately see that those concepts, techniques, or tools are adopted by many companies. So, they will have motivation to gain more knowledge and know which areas they should focus on. Moreover, guess speakers who our professors invite to give us a lecture here are very interesting since we can know right away that they are the innovator or leader in their field. And, technology in their lecture is therefore the state of art.

Third, the university doesn’t hesitate to uses innovative technology in teaching. And, numerous resources, e.g. paper’s databases, are allocated to the student. Using both technology and resources means that the university spends enormous money to buy these resources. Although this is a big difference which we don’t have in Thailand, the result of this difference is significant only in a group of students that use those resources. Most students still don’t utilize these resources.

I think that are three major reasons why computer science here is very famous. And, a lot of us would like to come here. I do not know how much I gain in my first semester, but I intend to move forward until I am graduated from here.

Loy Krathong festival

Hope that it is not too late for Loy Krathong festival. Our Thai club at USC just gets a change to hold this event because the real Loy Krathong Day is unfortunately the Thanksgiving Day. So, we just have Loy Krathong festival on Dec 6. The event starts about 6 p.m. in the front of Leavey library. We have Thai musical band from Wat Thai in LA and various Thai food here. After having some food, we start to float krathongs in the pool in front of Leavey library. (I wonder who is responsible to clean up this mess, but anyway I leave the festival before it’s over.) A lot of Thai people join this festival and handful of international students including Japanese, Chinese, Indian, and etc. also come to join us too. I think it is another happy day while I am here, expect I have no one to “loy krathong” with me. So sad.

Conquest and Bonfire

Another exciting event has been held tonight at my university. “Conquest – The Ultimate Trojan Experience” is held before an American football game which USC will compete with UCLA on this Saturday in order to show power and spirit of Trojans. As I have mention, Trojan is the symbol of USC; moreover, Bear is the symbol of UCLA. So, the sign of this event started about a week ago. I can see posters around USC. And, more interestingly, some SC students tie a teddy bear with their bag and tow it with them along a floor. Poor teddy!! At first, I do not get what they are doing, but finally this event comes. With the concept of the event - “Celebrate athletic prowess, academic excellence, strong traditions, commitment to the Trojan family and – oh, yeah, beating UCLA!,” numerous Trojans (SC students) join this event tonight. The event’s quad is full with Trojans. The event starts with some talk shows and performances on a stage. Introducing our athletic teams including a volleyball team, a basketball team, and an American football team gets extreme attention from SC students. Next, “Bonfire” which is the most interesting event that I am waiting for starts. Trojans gather around a giant teddy bear and start to sing our song. The bear which is the symbol of UCLA is burn!! And, when it is burn to the ground, Trojans celebrate and fireworks are lunched. Obviously, there must be a similar event in UCLA. I heard that a UCLA student drove a helicopter to fire a color bomb to our statue once. And, there are a lot of stories between USC and UCLA.

Thanksgiving and Black Friday

Another holiday – Thanksgiving – is coming on November 22, this year. Normally, Americans will go back to their home, visit their family, and have turkey. For international students like us, on the contrary, we stay in our place and may plan a small trip in this holiday. My friends plan a trip to a shopping store in Cabazon which is 2 hours driving away. I thus have an opportunity to follow them and get out from this little nut shell to see the world.

As we knew, one day after Thanksgiving is Black Friday. And, every store will have the biggest discount. Everyone expects to buy some stuff in Black Friday because they will be very cheap. The discount will range from 25% to 75% and the average is about 30% - 40% (I think). However, if you make a very good plan to buy stuff, you will clearly save huge money. At first, I plan to buy a 500GB external harddisk which is normally cost about $170. Surprisingly, in this Black Friday, it costs only $80. But, I don’t decide to buy it eventually.

Normally, stores will open at the midnight of Thursday till the night of Friday. We therefore will get an overnight-shopping experience. Our trip to Cabazon starts at 8 p.m. on Thursday – Thanksgiving Day. It is a very fun trip because a lot of Thai people (about 20) join the trip. I also invite my Chinese friend to come with us too. After 2 hour driving, we reach the Dessert Hill Premium Outlet at Cabazon at 10 p.m. and still have plenty of time to exploring the outlet before the stores will open at the midnight. It’s such a gorgeous place with very cool weather and so relaxed ambiance. In case you don’t know, I love this kind of feeling so much.

To me, I don’t have a list of shopping stuff. I just only want to see the Black Friday and join with my friends. We explore the shops and look for a discount ads posting in front of the store. Some of interesting stores such as Nike, Gap, Billabong, Polo, and etc have the long line of people queuing. I also have no interest of queuing as well. When the store is open, every shop is rapidly full of people and almost has no space to walk. A line at the checkout counter is also lengthy too. You must lots of effort if you want to buy stuff here.

After walking around the outlet and take a look at some stores that don’t require queuing. Stopping at a café, I take some rest with my other friends who don’t want to queue a line as well. At last, I leave the outlet with empty hand, but I’m so full of a remarkable experience. I love this event and would like to come back again in the next year. I also take a lot of photos, but unfortunately my camera’s memory card is broken. I therefore don’t have any picture of this place. So bewailed.

Places to eat

First of all, I have to mention that I’m very bad in finding delicious food or a great place to eat. Just having something to eat is fine. I, however, write this blog in case some would like to know what eateries are around USC. Around USC, there are many cafés and restaurants which you can choose. The average price of a meal is around $3.00 - $7.00. But, if you are not aware of spending money the maximum price may go up to $20 - $30 in some cases.

In the campus, actually, there are many cafeterias located around USC. My favorite one is located in the center of the campus. We – SC students – call this place “Common” and it consists of many cafes. First, Carl’s Jr. which is a fast food restaurant selling American’s style burgers is the one that I usually have my lunch when I don’t have much time for going somewhere else. Then, the Common has other cafes where we can walk around and pick some food and then go to check them out at the cashier (just like supermarket, but it has only cooked food and drinks). These cafes have various kinds of food ranging from pizza, salad, and bakery to Chinese food.

Outside the USC, clearly, there must be a lot of restaurants due to variety of international students. UV or University Village located just north to the campus is the biggest facility that has numerous eateries. We can find Thai food here and some of them are delicious. We can also find various international foods such as Japanese, Koreans, Chinese, Greek, Mexican, and Indian food. Obviously, I love Japanese food very much. There are manifold restaurants around my house as well such as Panda, Macdonald, KFC, and Yoshinoya. In short, you can find a place to eat very easily if you can afford to pay for it.

Halloween

Trick or Treat!!! It’s Halloween. I’m looking forward to this event, Halloween – the first holiday event since I’ve been here. Everyone starts talking about this event two or three weeks before Oct 31. Finding a costume is the main topic that we are discussing about. Due to my exam, however, I don’t have any chance to get one. Whatever, on Saturday 25, parties start and a lot of people are walking around the street and wearing a luxury, beautiful, and gorgeous costume ranging from a wizard, a witch, or a gargoyle to a police, a nurse, Superman, Elvis, or Jack Sparrow (and Jack Sparrow is a popular one). And, you can guess that many SC students wear a very expensive costume, so the party at the fraternity and sorority’s street is very stunning.

However, the highlight of Halloween in Los Angeles must be at the Santa Monica Boulevard. On Oct 31, this street is closed for the public carnival and numerous people dressing like crazy go there. Getting off my apartment around 7.00 pm, I am trapped in a traffic jam for 3 hours and then arrive at the carnival around 10.00 pm. The Santo Monica Boulevard is full of people presenting their costume, laughing, singing, taking photos, and doing other stuff. The only word that I can describe this situation is “crazy”. I’ve never seen and participate in this crazy event before. Everyone can do weird and crazy things and people are like it. After walk along the street, the midnight is passed. I’m so tired and then decide to go home. The first Halloween in the United States in my life has passed. I go to bed and sleep very tight.

Fraternity and Sorority

Today, I’m going to tell a story about fraternities and sororities. First of all, fraternity which I refer doesn’t mean a friendship, but here it means a club at a university such as USC and it has only male members. Can you guess the meaning of sorority? Surely, it means a club of woman students.

Actually, I have a little knowledge of these things. But, I still would like to write this story because I think it is a very interesting system. There are a lot of fraternities and sororities in USC. All of them are named in Roman’s letters such as Alpha Phi, Sigma Phi Omega, or Gamma Epsilon Omega. These associations have the concept of “bonds of brotherhood (or sisterhood),” so they provide housing for undergraduate students as well as a lot of activities to follow their concept. When a new student would like to join a fraternity or sorority, he/she has to submit an application to the clubs and a carefully selection procedure will be take place to choose new members. Then, the members of the club are going to live in the same large house or apartment complex and doing some activities such as having a party, cheering, or playing sports together. After a long period of time e.g. 4 years, students who live together in the same house have developed a relationship with both friends and the club as well as memorable experiences. So, the concept of “bonds of brotherhood (or sisterhood)” is achieved and the binding between a student and his/her club is created. These students will be come back and make contributions to the associations when they are the alumni.

Fraternity and sorority are not only give their member a good relationship with their friends but also implant leadership, intellect, and other qualities as stated in the club’s mission. For example, The Pi Beta Phi Mission is “To promote friendship, develop women of intellect and integrity, cultivate leadership potential, and enrich lives through community.”

Well, in my opinion, I think that this is a very good system. I think I can get a strong feeling of university life through a fraternity. By the way, another reason that makes me write this blog is that I live in the old fraternity and I see a lot of activities going on around my house.

Facing the midterm exam

Actually, when I write this blog, my midterm has already gone (then I will have a chance to write this). As I mention in previous blog, I’m taking four courses this semester, so I face four arduous midterm exams. The first one is an academic writing. Although this exam’s result will not be included in my major grade, I’m still so worry about it. Anyway, I’ve already done it but I think it is not good enough. I must try to improve my skill in both writing and speaking. So tried with that!! Then, I take Database system and AI exam. In the former, I deal with database design, EER diagram, half-paged SQL (- -“), and spatial database indexing (If you are not in computer science, just pass it). And the later is very similar to AI in Chulalongkron (I began to sorry that I take this course because nothing is new here). The last one is Computer Network exam. This one is the subject which I worry about most and it is also the best subject in this term too. However, I’ve just finished the exam in this morning and I think I’m doing well. Just wait to see the result. Well, the midterm exam is a boring topic, but I’ll coming up with something very interesting after this exam since I will gain more time in my life.

Camarillo Premium outlet

Is “outlet” an interesting topic? Well, I think so. Ha ha! Camarillo Premium outlet where I went to locates in the north-west of Los Angeles and about 2 hr driving from USC. I’d like to say it is a huge outlet as I’ve ever seen, but some told me that she just went to a bigger one. So, it is a medium size, I think. Containing about 120 outlet stores such as Puma, Nike, Guess, Pac sun, Aeropostale, and so on, Camarillo outlet is a good place for many shoppers. For my Wendy’s friends, this outlet is about 4-times larger than the Nike’s outlet in Delaware.

Walking around this outlet, I got a cap with USC logo from Nike. It’s just $8.00 while about $20 is normal price in USC store. Surprisingly, sunglasses are very expensive (from $10 to above $300). But, I also bought a sunglass for $10. I also got a new wallet from Fossil too.

Actually, I don’t have a lot of stories about shopping to tell you. But, I would like to share some information about outlet. Camarillo outlet isn’t an only outlet in Los Angeles. If you visit website http://www.premiumoutlets.com/centers/, you will see various outlets across the United States. Camarillo outlet is the one just above the LOS ANGELES. Well, as you can see, I still have a lot of them to visit. Ha ha! Desert Hills outlet is another one close to LA. I think I will have a chance to visit this one soon.

Sun’s Life at USC

Well, this is my third week at USC. I’m becoming a full “SC student” at last. Today, I’m going to tell you about my life in here. Firstly, I would like to talk about my courses. I take 4 courses in this term, fall 2007. It might be tough. But, I have some basic in every subject which is Database System, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Network, and Academic Writing. Am I used to learn all of these subjects? Those names of subjects are similar to the old one, but all of them have 5 in the beginning of a course id (which means they are for graduate student only). I already, however, learned half of those subjects.

I have classes on four days – M, Tu, W, and Th. On Monday, my class starts at 3.00 pm, so I have all morning to stay lazily at my home. But, on Tuesday and Thursday, I have three classes a day from 7.30 am to 4.00 pm. That’s so bad and tried. And, another class on Wednesday starts at 8.30 am. So, as you can see, I don’t have a lot of classes; however, I do have a lot of homework. Every subject has an assignment in every week. And, an assignment will take you a lot of time because it likes a small project. Some assignments need to submit a written program; some assignments need to submit a written report.

About my living area, I live in a large house on 28th street and Figueroa. This street is full of undergraduate houses which belong to the campus (I think). But, there are some houses for rent. Although my house is huge, it’s divided into 24 rooms which is 5*4 meter for each room. It’s just one single room called studio. So, I don’t have any kitchen in my room. But, I still cook with my microwave because it will be save more money than having dinner outside. I also have a small refrigerator. I need to share my bathroom with another roommate – Nick – living in the next room. He is American and studies in Business.

I live my life with a second-handed green bike which I bought it for $80 (very expensive). With my bike, I can go to classroom in ten minutes. My Thai friends live in Ellendale Street which is five-minute ride. I always ride to hang out in their home because I am very lonely in my house.

Well, you’ve known all basic information: my university (in previous column), my classes, and my house. So, I’m going to tell you about my daily routine. Let me start from the morning. I usually get up around 6.00 – 9.00 am depending on my first class’s schedule. Then, I will have something to eat which normally is cereal and mike, butter and bread, or rice soup. Start my computer; connect to internet and MSN; listen to some Thai music; and check my emails are habitually performed in this step. After I finish my breakfast and clean up the mesh, I will go to class or start doing my works. This is a boring part. I usually spend time all day in front of my computer if I don’t go to class. And, in the evening, sometimes, I go to sport facility to play badminton or football and have dinner with my other friends. But, generally, I prepare food on my own. Rice, egg, sausage, and ham are the main menu. Chicken fillet and salad are the second level menu for me. And, I will spend all night doing my homework or watching movies. It’s such a boring routine of live.

On my weekend, it’s more boring because I’m alone. If I don’t have any plan, I usually go to library and I will read and sleep there. However, there are some activities which I need to do on my weekend. Cleaning my room up, washing my clothes, and going to a supermarket is queued in my task’s list. Superior is the nearest supermarket which is five-minute ride away. Buying a carton of eggs, a gallon of mike, hams, sausages, and some fruits can cost about $7 - $20. But, I can live with this stock for a week.

Well, that’s all my daily routine. As you can see, international student’s life is not such a fun and excited life (without a lot of money which you can use to buy a car, travel every amusement park, and so on). Anyway, it will make you more mature and stronger. My life here is boring now, but I have some plan to change the way of live.

The USC

Hi all my friends. My semester has already started for three weeks. But, I have not told you about my university yet. So, let me introduce you the USC. As you know, my university’s campus – University Park campus of USC – is located in Los Angeles, California. It’s very close to Downtown LA and many infamous places such as Korea Town and Thai Town. We also have Health Sciences Campus located in the north of Downtown and many research institutes such as Institute for Creative Technologies in LA. However, I’d rather spend my time within this campus because it’s hard to go out there without a car.

We, SC students, have the” Trojan” as our symbol for the fighting spirit of USC athletes to the ancient Trojans. We also are the best American Football Team in the United States. And, our important competitor is obviously UCLA. USC isn’t a huge university. Located in the heart of Los Angeles limits a space in USC; however, I still have to ride a bike within this university. There are, moreover, multiple facilities ranging from a library and a computer room to a sport facility. As I’m writing this blog, I stay in the Leavey Library which open 24 hours. About sport facility, I would to introduce you the Lyon Center. It is a fitness center where you can go to exercise. I usually go to play badminton with Thai friends every week.

At USC, we also have Distance Education Network (DEN) which can help students a lot. With DEN system, one section in every subject is always recorded and uploaded into the DEN’s website. The student who enrolls in that course will be able to access and watch the lecture as many times as he wants. It’s just great. I can’t miss any lectures. And, I can review the lecture when I don’t understand it.

That is all for today. However, there are a lot of stories about USC. May be next time, I will write about it again.

Sea World

Finally, I’ve already passed the first week in university. Thai club leading by Poon and Eddie plans a trip to San Diego and Sea World in order to welcome all new members. So, we plan to leave LA on Friday, August 30. We rent an 8-seated car to ride to San Diego. Oat, Op, Boon, Pai, Bill, Beam, Nut, and I head to San Diego that night. When we reach a luxury house in San Diego, we meet a lot of Thai student there. Wow! There are about 30 Thai people in this club. We have a party and karaoke that night before we go to bed. It’s really amazing.

On Saturday, September 1, we go to the Sea World which is not far from our house. I get a ticket for $50. It’s very expensive. We walk around Sea World and watch shows: Dolphin Show and Shamu Show. However, dolphin show is not an excited experience for me. I’m too old for this kind of show. I would be excited if I were a little kid. Shamu which is a killer wheal is more excited, but it’s still bored. I take some pictures of Shamu, but it move so fast and I can’t get the great shot.

After the Shamu show, we go to a beach near our home. I have a little chance to walk along the beach and watch the sun set. Then, we go home and have some barbecue party before to go back to Los Angles.

Santa Monica beach

It is a Friday, Aug 17. I have a chance to meet Na Ann again. Na Ann comes around here to have a check-up. Then, she picks me and Poy up and takes us to a Japanese restaurant. Wow! I will have Japanese food today. First, we order some appetizers such as Salmon, Tuna, and Roll. Then, I have a Salmon steak as a lunch. After lunch, we go to Santa Monica beach and plan to pass many tourist attractions in Los Angeles such as the Sunset Boulevard, the Beverly Hills, the Rodeo Drive, and then Santa Monica beach.

First, the Sunset Boulevard is a central business district boulevard. You can find two side of boulevard full of shops and restaurants. Moreover, this boulevard run on foothills, so you can see a beauty of city from here. Second, the Beverly Hills is a high-end village of stars and millionaires. Third, the Rodeo Drive is a high-end shopping street. You will find many stunning cars around here.

Finally, we reach the beach. Santa Monica is the most famous beach and pier in Los Angeles. We park a car on the pier and cost $8.00 for parking space. Then, we take a walk and photo around the pier. The sun light is strong and burn, but we still have to walk. The beach is crowded. Many people are sunbathing and many are swimming and many just enjoy their vacation.

The Grove Shopping Center

On 13 Aug, Pa Jym and Na Ann come to see me. I get up around 7.00 a.m. and get ready for today. Pa Jym and Na Ann pick me up around 8 a.m. They are very jolly. We drive around USC – my university – in order to find some house for me. Consequently, we find some interesting house. It is an old undergraduate house and very nice. It has a huge living room, TV, and four sofas. In my room which is 4*5 meters, there are a bed, desk, chair, microwave, and refrigerator. I also don’t have to pay for water, electricity, and internet. Some told me that this is a good deal for $575 a month. I, however, have to share a bath room and I have no kitchen. We finally reserve this room. After touring around USC, we plan to go to the Grove. We pick Poy up at her school and then we drive to the Grove.

At the Grove, I experience another impression of Los Angeles. The Grove is a shopping center containing a lot of shops (Apple, Nike, and so on), restaurants, and theatres. At the center of the Grove, we can found a beautifully-decorated fountain and garden which can give you nice experience there. Here, we have a lunch at the Cheesecake Factory, which is the most famous cake restaurant. I have a salmon steak and coffee. Then, we finish our lunch with a tasty cheese cake. Wow, it is very wonderful. Finally, we have to go home. I say goodbye to Pa Jym and Na Ann and thank you for your help and delicious lunch. I also look forward to meet them again soon.

Hollywood Boulevard

It was the first day in LA and I get up around 12.00 a.m. result form an effect of jet lag. Firstly, I and Poy plan to go to my university. We, however, have changed the plan to go to Thai Town instead. Poy and Dong teach me how to ride a bus. It’s difficult for someone new like me. I can’t remember all of roads, so I just follow them. I pay $5.00 for a day pass ticket which I can ride as much as I can within one day. When we’ve arrived Thai Town, we visit many shop there. Moreover, I’m trying to open a telephone contract but I can’t settle the deal. After we walk for a while, we decide to go to the Hollywood Boulevard and will catch up the bus to go there. But first, we visit Ross for Less shop before we leave Thai Town. Ross is a store for someone looking for apparel, accessories, and footwear and it is very cheap. Then, we take a bus to Hollywood Boulevard.

Hollywood Boulevard is my first impression of Los Angeles. There are some magnificent theatres called Mann Chinese Theater and Kodak Theater. In front of Mann Chinese Theater, you can find some Theater’s staffs dressing like a star such as Harry Potter and Jack Sparrow. You also can find Walk of Fame there too. It is a name of many famous star placed on the street. So, I take a photo of Celine Dion name. There are a lot of cool shops and theaters around this street. You can buy some music CDs, famous shoes, and so on. At last, we need to get back home, but I have a great day and experience on Hollywood Boulevard.

Taipei Airport and Arriving Los Angeles

After 3 hours flying, I arrive at Taipei. I need to transfer to another flight to Los Angeles and it takes me 6 hours in this airport. “Oh, it’s such boring time” some told me. But, in my view, I can spend time taking a photo here. I was here once when I was going to the United States for Work and Travel program 2 years ago. This airport changes a bid such as a free internet access spot. I can use gmail and msn to contact my home and make me feel like I am not too far away from home. After that I explore this airport and take a photo. Taipei airport has four large building which only I can see. All of them are gate and duty free shop. I, however, buy nothing here. I just spend my four dollars for the Subway 6-inches sandwich (1 dollar equal 30 NT).

Finally, it is time for departure to Los Angeles. A lone 12.5-hour flight almost takes off. It is the Boeing 777 (actually I’m not sure) and the plane looks more hi-tech than my old flight. There is personal touch-screen TV for each customer. Again, I’m sitting on the first row seat which I can straight my legs. Beside me is a young woman from Philippines with her child. The baby is so cute and noisy. I’m too tried now and falling to sleep. I’m waked up by an airhostess for a meal. I’m too drowsy and I don’t know what I choose until the plate is lay in front of me. Trying to wake up, I find some movies to watch. Oh, I find Spiderman 3, Shrek 3, and Fracture in the list of Hollywood movies. I’m so surprised why there are these movies on the plane. The baby beside me starts crying again and tries to get off the seat. Shortly, her father presents and asks me to switch the seat. His seat is in a business class and more large and comfortable (but, not the TV’s size). I, therefore, have the first chance sitting in a business class. After about 12 hour on the sky, we arrive the United States of America. There are a lot of instructions about US-Visit and I have to fill out 2 forms (one is I-94 form).

We arrive Los Angeles International Airport or LAX at last. My long flight with a tiny seat is ended. LAX is a huge airport and they have to use shuttle bus between the plane and immigration building. A lot of people queue a long line at the immigration counter; so, it takes about 1 hour to get into an immigration counter. At this counter, I give an officer my passport and 2 forms from a flight. He asks me some questions about my university and football game (which I don’t know). After that I claim my luggage and move out of this airport. I’m so confused because I remember that I have to scan and check my luggage at San Francisco; but, why I have not to check it here.

Moving from the airport, Poy and Mee (Poy’s friend) pick me up and we are going to rest in a house at Crenshaw and Washington Blvd. At last, I’m here – Los Angeles.

Apart from Thailand

It is in the middle of the night and I have to get up and get dress because today is the first day of my new journey to Los Angeles, California. I’m going to study a Master of Computer Science at the University of Southern California for 1 and half year. My luggage was already packed and move to a car. I check my stuff and say goodbye to my warm and lovely home before I will be parted from it. I get up in the car with my family and we’re heading to the airport.

At the airport, I load my luggage at the check-in counter of EVA Airway. After that I have almost one hour before I will go into a gate. Mon, Dad, ArYee, ArKung, Sea, Sand, and I take a lot of photos there. Tin – my old SPS friend – is there too. After saying goodbye to me, my family gives me a hug and bless before I leave. “How long have I never hugged my family?” I think. This is the best separation between my family and me. I will miss everyone.

I head to a gate alone and lost sight of my family. I’m on my own now. At the gate, I can’t see a line of Thai people. First, I’m so confused; but, I have an inkling that it’s too early for Thai to wake up because it’s just 5 o’clock. The airport, however, should open at least one Thai passport verification counter. When I pass passport verification, it’s almost my departure time. I’m in such a hurry heading to the departure gate. After passport verification, I have been checked for the water and weapon. At last, I am the gate in time. I just realize that all people around me are Chinese and I have no idea what they are speaking.

I give an airhostess my passport and boarding card. Then, she lets me get on the plane. I proceed to my seat which is next to the emergency exit one. In my opinion, it is one of the comfortable seats because there is no front seat and you can straight your legs. Beside me is a middle-aged man who talk too much and loud. I think I’m unlucky now and I can’t sleep during the flight. There is one meal on the plane. When a meal is served, an airhostess will ask you to choose one option from two of them and I choose pork. Then, I try to sleep; but, I can’t. So, I watch a movie during a 3-hour flight.
